Default Winter wheels and TPMS reset

I put my winter wheels on a few weeks ago, and drove around with the TPMS warning light on. All the time wondering why, with all the technology in these cars, couldn't Lexus make a system that would just pick up the new sensor codes and work like a modern car should. Not wanting to pay the dealer twice a year to hook up their diagnostic computer to reprogram the sensor codes, I ordered an ATEQ Quickset (http://www.tpmstools.ca/tpms-tools/p.../ateq-quickset) so that I could do it myself. I'm happy to report that it works as advertised on my 2012 RX350.

Hello Alex,

I am purchasing a set of winter tires and rims as well for my 2011 RX350. How long does it take to reprogram the codes? Also, how much was this tool?

Thanks, Charles

Hi Charles,

Actually programming the codes into the car takes a few seconds. You'll spend more time installing the software on a PC and entering the codes into the computer so they can be downloaded to the ATEQ. Follow the link I posted for the instructions. Here's a link to the Canadian distributor: http://www.racingking.ca/tpms-tools-...kset-p-60.html. Prices is $161

Thanks Alex!

In the instructions, it states that you need the ID codes for the new sensors. I suppose that you get this from the dealer/other vendor before they install them in your winter tires. However, when you've programmed the ECU does it not erase the codes for the summer tires? In other words, when it comes time to re-swap out winters, will you not need the ID codes from the summer tires? If so, how do you get them if they were part of the original equipment?

Correct, you need the ID codes for your new wheels, mine were printed on the work order. Any competent shop can also read them out for you using their much more expensive TPMS tools. They can wave a magic wand near the sensor and read the codes wirelessly like the car would.

The unit can store two sets of codes. When there are no codes stored in it, the act of connecting it to the car and pressing either the summer or winter button causes it to retrieve the codes that are currently programmed in the car. You then upload these to your computer, enter the codes for the new sensors, then program the ATEQ. Once both sets of codes are in the ATEQ, all you have to do is connect it to the car and press either the summer or winter button - job done.
