Obsidian Black Clear Coated?
When I bought my first black RX300 back in 2000, Lexus blacks were not clear coated, all the other
colors offered were.
Anyone know for sure if the 2012 Obsidian black is clear coated or not?

Wow and I thought single stage went out in the mid to late 90's. My '93 Miata is a single stage brilliant black. Seems like, based on the below past discussions it is a clear now, but back in your 300 days it wasn't.
There are discussions on the Obisidian in these two locations:
3rd Gen: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...at-or-not.html
1st Gen (not an RX but the practice wouldn't change): https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...lear-coat.html
Now what I find odd is that when you search for touch up paints for your color you don't get a warning that you NEED a clear coat for on top of the base. Not even the Lexus accessory touch up paint shows a clear coat need. Then again it doesn't for my Stargazer which is definitely cleared.

Good to know. I have to admit, though, I personally think a single stage black that is detailed properly has a much deeper and richer look than anything with a clearcoat. When I have my Miata next to a 99 or newer (even a 2012) the black is like oil. Deeper, richer, and shinier than the clearcoated partners.

I haven't detailed my 12 yet, but you may, repeat may, find the mirrors and pillar(s) are single stage. The rest of the car is more than likely clear coat. I asked at the Canadian factory when they stopped using single stage, tour guide didn't know.

Funny thing about this is when I bought the RX 300 back in 2000, the salesmen said Lexus
doesn't clear coat the black color because they wanted to bring out a deeper luster..........
