Default Question on RX Oil Change and Tire Rotations?

I have a 2011 RX350 with 8200 miles.

Does the oil change reminder light come on automatically every 10,000 miles? And I guess an Oil change for this car with Synthetic is about $60, right? That's quite a change from what I am used to.

Regarding tire rotation, the dealer said this should be done every 5,000 miles.

For those of you who own the RX, are you making separate trips to the dealer just to rotate the tires?

If so, what do they charge for rotation?

Please let me know. Thanks.

The oil reminder light actually comes on after 5k unless they have changed it since the 2010 model. If you check in the manual it tells you how to reset the reminder. You didn't say whether or not you bought it new. If you bought it new there are 5k and 10k free services including oil change at 10k. If you are close to a Toyota dealer they can do the same service a lot cheaper. I'll probably go to the Toyata dealer and have oil changed and tires rotated around 9k miles. I'm through with the free services so I face the same thing.

I purchased new. I did get a free 5K service but it was just inspection and not an oil change as I am discovering today.

Was quite surprised to have local shop quote me $60 for an oil change?

Is the free 10K oil change from Lexus standard or something you negotiated in your deal?

On all of the 2010's the first two services were free inluding oil change. I assume that this is the case with the 2011's and 12's. Just call your dealer to confirm this. My toyota dealer told me that the cost for changing the oil on the RX was only about $10 higher than what it is to change the oil in my Avalon which is $29.95. This quote was about a year ago. so it is probably a little higher now. Your dealer should have rotated your tires at the 5k service.

Your 10k service is complimentary from Lexus, it's part of the warranty. They will do the first oil change and rotate the tires and check things over. They should have told you this during the turnover process.

$60 for an oil and filter change (synthetic oil) is reasonable from an independent shop. Lexus dealer will be higher.

You can get tires rotated anywhere, it's no big deal.

Just called my Lexus dealer and confirmed that the oil change/tire rotation at 10K is complimentary.

They said I should wait until the indicator on the screen lights up and then call them.

Thank you for helping. I almost wasted $60 today on an oil change that I did not need to buy.

An oil change is never a waste of money. It might be overlapping but not a waste. Better too often than not often enough.

I'd change it close to the 10k mileage at your convenience. The indicator will light up at 5k from the last time it was set.

My car has 8200 miles now. The dealer did not change oil at 5K service and said light would come on at 10K.

I also have an 2011 Acura MDX which uses regular oil.

Can you choose the type of oil you want in the RX350?

Apparently I can go with 7500 miles with regular oil or 10,000 miles with synthetic which is 3 times the price.

Do I have a option the oil?

The warranty states that you need to use 0w20 fully synthetic oil in the RX's I do believe.

As Jairus stated, you need the 0w20w Synthetic oil. The new low friction engine families are designed to use only that.

Default Learning from the RX Forum!

I love learning in this forum. Our 2010 RX350 only has 3600 miles, so useful info on the 5,000 and 10,000 no charge oil changes. I have a USA vehicle in Canada, so if it's warranty required by Lexus ( as Evitzee noted) I should still be covered no charge?

Atomarchio, brace yourself. Here in CA, our dealers are charging ~ $175 for the oil change service. It's what you pay for a dealer that supports a loaner fleet of Lexii.

I must be missing something here.

My Acura MDX can go 7,500 miles with regular oil change that costs about $20.

The Lexus RX can go 10,000 miles with synthetic oil that costs $60 (and in your case $175).

OMG. What is going on here? What's the benefit again?

If you go to the Mobil 1 site and watch a few of their videos, you will see that synthetic oil can prevent gunk and wear in your engine. It is really amazing how these oils can keep the inside of your engine looking like new. Last year I saw a show on TV where a fleet of taxi cabs in Las Vegas was used to test old/regular oil against Mobil 1 synthetic. It was truly amazing. The regular oil cabs became full of gunk and old. The Moble 1 cabs were like new.
