Default Oil Change @ 10,000

Any RX 350 owners out there changing their synthetic 0 w 20 oil sooner then 10,000??

I'm from old school, and I know 10,000 is recommended by Lexus, but, WOW, that's a long time.

Cheers!

I did my oil change @ 5k and paid for it just to remove break-in debris, and had the 10k service last week. Now I'm set for the next 9 months.

My 79 year old Dad was the same way when he got his CRV and you don't change the oil until the thing tells you to. He's fine now. If you want to change it more often I am sure the folks making the synthetic and the filter will appreciate the extra revenue.

I've been using synthetics for over 10 years in all my vehicles and changing them every year and/or 10,000 miles. You would be crazy to spend the extra money for a synthetic if you were going to change it any more frequently.

I believe alot of people "think" they get the oil change at the first service 5k....but end up being unpleasantly surprised not realizing the new 10k interval for oil change.
For my first oil change, I didn't want to wait until the 10k at the dealer.

I did my own 1st oil change at 3750 miles Mobil 1 0w-20 with Toyota filter element.

My wife doesn't even put 10k on the vehicle in one year anyway....more like 8k or so.

Regardless of mileage accrued, not going to let it go more than a year without doing it in any case.

Great Advice here.

Also if you look at the first free 6 month/5,000 mile service, Lexus states
which ever comes first.

I haven't got 5,000 miles on my 2012 yet, but seriously considering doing the first oil change @ 5,000 miles by me, a Toyota dealership, or by Lexus..

I changed mine out at 2,500. Oil changes are inexpensive and fast.

I changed my brother's oil in his 450h at 3,000 miles. I didn't feel comfortable keeping a factory fill in there any longer. After that, he had it changed at 10k miles. And, now he plan's on following the 10k OCI, as most of his miles are highway anyways.

I'm new to Lexus...I've had several Acura's. When changing oil on them, you have to replace a crush washer on the drain plug each time.
Is there a similar type crush washer on the Lexus RX 350 ?
Thanks

I had mine changed after 1 year although I only had about 7500 miles. The car is 1.5 years old now and still doesn't have 10,000 miles. It just seemed too long to wait.

As time moves on and tech improves things get better, if you are not in a dusty climate or drive your RX HARD 10K will be fine. The Lexus engineers have put the RX thru its stress test etc before saying it is ok to go more than 5K between oil changes, this same debate came up when manufacturers went from 3K -5K. Try not to worry or over think this one, follow your scheduled maintenance and you will be fine.

Interesting to see how many owners like myself, changed the oil prior to the 10K. I did mine at 2-3K and then had the dealer do it at the 10K which was 17 months into owning the RX. I don't put on 10K in a year but I will be changing the oil yearly from here on out, just safer that way.

I'm curious. I know that synthetic oils last a lot longer before they break down, but it seems to me that you would still need to worry about other contaminants and foreign materials. Wouldn't oil get dirty at the same rate regardless of the oil type? I have actually thought about replacing filters in between oil changes.

Have there been any changes that make filters effective for 10K miles without clogging up and reducing oil flow?

My guess is that synthetic oil provide more slippery action between the piston so that the amount of debris that gets into the engine oil is less compare to dino oil. Add to that they last longer makes it reasonable that changing it at 10k is fine. I am sure the car manufacturer has tested this in a real car in quality control.
