Tonneau Cartridge Connection to the Rear Seat Backs
The flaps in front of the tonneau cartridge connect to the back of the rear seats via push-in clips. I noticed that when I pull the backseat release lever from the trunk, as the backseat folds down, it will yank the seat away from the tonneau clips. Is this working by design or should I manually pull out the clips before releasing the seat to avoid any damage to the tonneau flaps?

i think that is by design. that you don't have to manually detach the clips prior to pulling the release lever.
The whole concept of the RX or Lexus in general was "less is more" ( i just made that up!).
Seriously, from keyless entry, push to start ignition, to an automatic rear door opening from a push on the key Fob
i don't see how the logic of doing the unclipping manually.

+1. They are designed to release with ease so you can just release the rear seats by the handle. No worries
