ipad won't charge
In my 2011 RX350, I have used the USB connection port with my iPhone 4 to play/charge etc with no problems. when I plug in my iPad (2nd gen) it connects to play music etc, but it will not charge. What am I doing wrong?

There is limited power output on the USB connection to the RX. There may not be sufficient power output for the ipad to charge. It is (ipad) in a sense a laptop and does require much more power than an iphone to charge.

Another possibility is the cable you are using. Is it an original cable? A while ago, I searched for a longer cable than the original and read many comments that some cables would not charge the iPad. Just a thought.

VERY good point. I had the same problem with cheap 99-cent knockoff cable -- my iPhone wouldn't always charge or recognize the connection.

I would check the cable first, then I would buy an adapter for the 12v cigarette lighter.

I have a 2012 RX 350 and my iPad and my iPhone 4s both charge as they should. That said,,, I did have a defective cable and it would not charge with that cable but all other functions worked perfectly.

You need at least 1 amp from the usb port to charge the ipad. Most usb ports put out less than 1 amp of power. The newer Mac's usb ports put out 2 amps. The ipad brick power supply puts out 2 amps. So at 1 amp, it will take a long time to charge the ipad.

My "New iPad" 3rd gen will arrive tomorrow according to the tracking info. I'm soaking up all kinds of info and just came across some interesting stuff. "The quickest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode.
Here is the link, it's on the right hand side under charging tips. http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html
Camping on my front porch tomorrow for the "Big Brown Truck". No tax ordering it online and getting engraving and shipping free too. Saving on tax and getting it same day as the stores turn it loose-Priceless
