While most SAs are very nice folks, their pay depends on what they can sell you. Remember what peoples functions are in the equation, yours is to keep as much of your hard earned money as possible and the SA's job is to separate you from your money

When I was researching this question I went out to my local dealer's website and they use the "severe duty" (or whatever they called it) maintenance schedule which almost no one needs. I noticed this at the Acura dealer with my old car. I checked the manual and remembered what was required. Then when I was in the dealer's waiting room the maintenance schedule they had posted was very different. When I checked the manual again after I got home I realized it was the same situation; the dealer uses the maintenance schedule for if you're using your car as a taxi cab.

So I'm guessing this is a common tactic to justify selling you more maintenance than you really need while technically adhering to the manual.

Service managers are compensated based on commissions for the service they sell so its in their best interest to sell you as much as you'll pay for.

I look at the manual and tell them to do exactly that and not one additional thing without calling me first.
