RX 450h AWD vs. FWD w/ Traction Control & ECT
I've been driving real-time AWD vehicles (Toyota Landcruiser's) for about 20 years. However, I recently switched to a '13 RX450h FWD on account of a change in my world view re/ individual gasoline consumption.
I'm not looking for reassurance that I made the right choice in selecting a FWD vs. AWD, but I am looking for informed viewpoints re/ the assertion that a FWD vehicle with ECT and Traction Control provides the same level of safety as an AWD vehicle. BTW, this is not my assertion. It is something my Lexus sales person said when I told him I was interested in the FWD to maximize fuel efficiency. So, is there any merit to this statement with regard to the RX450h?

There is no best answer that will cover all situations. I'm sure there are some times the all time 4wd land cruiser would be beneficial, especially if off road where it's recommended you 'do not' drive the RX450h. But saying that I've driven in the snow taking only the normal precautions a person in snow should take and had no problems. I'm sure some of our more northern brethren have had even more experience in the white stuff. At the speeds you'll normally travel, the VDIM that's standard in your car will probably keep you safer IMO then the awd Toyota model. And all this info is a matter of opinion and different circumstances can warrant different answers. Take what you can from this and form your own opinion.
