Winter tire opinions?
Time to think about new winter tires for my new ride.
Which do you prefer and why?
Looks like the top 3 contenders are:
Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1
Michelin Lattitude X-ice Xi2
and the more performance oriented
Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow
Dealer will do the seasonal swap on the oem wheels for $96 including Road Force Balacing and store the off season tires for me.
Link to the TireRack survey for the top 3 (they do offer 3 additional winter tires not shown here).

You might also consider the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R SUV or Nokian WRG2 SUV if you can find a place in your area that sells them.

I've got the Blizzak's mounted on 18" factory rims. Unlike Michelin X-Ice that I've had on other cars in the past, these seem to get flat spots from sitting when cold so that when you first start driving you get the annoying buh-bump, buh-bump, until the tires heat up. When they wear out, I'm switching to the Michelins.

I've tried Nokina on my former RX 400h with amazing efficiency, silence and duration. Main default: design and sculptures of the tires which are rather designed for trucks rather than premium vehicles.
Last year I bought Vrederstein for my current 450h and again, quite good eventhough I did notget any chance to test them on the snow last winter. However, on wet roads, humidty, etc. and on dry pavements, the tire is wonderfull, efficient and again more silent than the summer tires I've got with the Lexus (Bridgestone).
Price is again cheaper compared with Michelin (not better and too expensive in France particularly) and other competitors like Continental (excellent too and tested on previous Volvo XC90 but not on RX)

Does the RX with AWD really need snows in the winter? All-seasons not good enough?
For what its worth, over the years I've used Blizzaks on several vehicles (non-AWD) and I've been very happy with them and wouldn't buy anything else. Others might be ok too but I've seen no reason not to get he Blizzaks.

No, I don't play soccer!
All season tires are good enough, at least for me. I've been through more than a dozen winters in RXs, even going out during blizzards to have a little fun. Haven't been stuck once. But I can see getting winter tires for that extra assurance. I'll be curious to see how the Pirelli Scorpion Verdes I have on the 450h fare. Let it snow
