I have a 2013 RX 350 F Sport with the blind spot monitoring system. I have had my car for 2 weeks and I like the BSM system. When a car is in the lane on either side of me, just behind me in my blind spot a BSM indicator on the the corresponding rear view mirror lights up. I have not had an emergency situation where I have had to use it but I am getting used to paying attention when the indicator lights come on. I can see where this safety feature could become useful at some point. I paid $500 for the option and I think it is worth it.

After a week with it, my vote is yes.
The little reminders are subtle enough so as not to be intrusive but obvious enough to remind you to double check before changing lanes. They don't replace a quick look over the shoulder but they may remind you to look again in case you missed that vehicle in the next lane the first time.
If the feature lets you avoid one accident in the life of the vehicle it pays for itself. Even if it doesn't, it still gives you an assist at being a safer and more responsible driver by helping avoid the near misses that raise everybody's anxiety level.
