Thank you for the battery idea... it's at least 3 years old and I've suspected that as my next move. Took it to Autozone (and also to O reily... they are literally next door to each other!) and both said 'good battery' with the hand-held tester they had. The one voltage I saw was 12.83 vdc. My battery (Interstate) is an 800 CCA, the best they both had was only 720 CCA. I'd have replaced mine if either had something comparable, but not something 10% less than what I have now. Put mine back in with the intent of stopping by the Interstate folks tomorrow for a like-item replacement. We'll see...

I did check the voltage after installing... 12.36 vdc... indicates some draw but not a lot. Interestingly, i checked it again a few hours later and it's now 12.25 vdc. Adds weight to the 'get a new battery' camp.

As to the ner-do-wells... We live on a cul-de-sac and I recognize all cars there each time. (I looked, there is a bit of petty crime around us but no-one that sophisticated.) All looks good from that direction.

Spent way too long today doing something of questionable outcome... I cleared out the garage so the car can come in... the first time in fifteen years that was done. The neighbors will sleep better no matter what... but the love of my life is liking the car inside tooooo much! Again... we'll see.... (AT least if the alarm goes off, we will avoid the pitchfork and torch crowd!)

Thank you again for the help, I WILL post the outcome once it is reached! Cliff

Just thought something.....

Usually places like AutoZone will use their scan tool free of charge to connect to your OBDII port and see if any stored error codes. Just copy down whatever codes pop up and look then up later.

Latest update... replaced battery... AND cleaned some corrosion from terminals (not visible from top, but was inside and on bottom of terminal). It's been quiet (but still inside) up to today. (Battery 'tested' good... but the drain was less than ideal. I still have some warranty on the battery, so got 45% off!)

As the alarm has been good since then, the car goes outside and into the elements tomorrow. Assume success, unless I come back to post otherwise later. (Fingers crossed).

THANK YOU to LEXUSRUS for the help! Nice forum... Cliff

Default It's STILL broken

Parked outside for the first time in a week+... and the alarm went off about 11pm. I was there withing 20 seconds, no-one around.

As I pulled it into the garage, I noted a momentary (1 second max) 'hood open' warning on the dash. It went off and did not repeat.

I still have the switch that is connected to the back of the hood latch disconnected and taped up.

Is there another HOOD POSITION SWITCH/SENSOR besides the one attached to the hood latch?

Also, does anyone know if I can TURN OFF THE ALARM altogether? I really don't need it, it is only a noisy problem.

AAUGH.... I'm going out of my mind on this one... especially at this late hour. Off to sleep (alarm allowing), will check back later. Thanks to anyone with ideas... Cliff

Sorry to hear that you are still having problems with the alarm. Sounds like the hood sensor is the problem.

Is there a fuse you can pull in the fuse box for the alarm? For the hood sensor? IDK if by doing so will cause the car to not start? Worth a try.

So while parked inside the garage you had no problems with the alarm? Are there a lot of traffic going by in your area? Maybe vibrations set the alarm off? Any airports near by? Any power lines near by?

HELP ... Alarm goes off randomly... here's what I've done so far. (First-timer... Sorry for the long write-up... but I do try to be clear and complete!)

Bought 2010 RX350 used two years ago, no problems at all until having hood recently repainted. Not sure the two are related... but shortly after (two days) had one-time warning of "hood loose" on dash while driving (pulled over to check... it was tightly secured). No repeat on the hood warning since.

Days later, the alarm went off on its own early in the morning, turned off with remote from house. Dew coated the entire car and inspection shows no-one tried to get in. (No smudged in dew) Alarm sounded again minutes later, I was actually outside, ~30 feet away, so I verified no-one was near. Reset with alarm and it stayed quiet.

Replaced batteries in both fobs. Pulled battery (unknown age, no sticker and was in car when purchased.) and had checked by Autozone... 'good battery'.

Alarm went off again that night. Reset with key fob and pulled battery contact for night time quiet.

Next morning I visually inspected under hood area (after removing all the plastic parts) and saw nothing obviously wrong. Clear of dirt and debris, no crushed wire bundles etc. WD40 to the hood latch and switch area best I could while still installed. Reinstalled battery and hoped for the best.

No alarm that night (yeah!)... however, alarm again went off 2 of the 3 following nights. Again pulled battery contact so we/neighbors could sleep.

So it's gone off only at night, in cool weather and warm, moist and dry (I doubt it's weather related.)

I found many references to faulty hood latches in forum/internet searches. That coupled with the only thing done to the vehicle recently was in the hood area prompted me to pull the hood latch, inspect the attached switch and ultimately disconnect the hood latch switch in order to isolate it from the system.

Performed many pre and post- alarm system checks with similar results after disconnecting the hood latch switch. Shock the car, pulled locked door handles etc. but never could get the alarm to sound, even with the door closed/locked, window open and fob 30 feet away. Reach in thru open window to open door yields no alarm. So I have never been able to set off the alarm.

Only differences between having the hood latch switch connected and not were these... the 'hood loose' warning is not evident with the switch disconnected and .... the alarm light on the dash. With switch connected, when the car is turned off, doors closed and locked, the dash alarm light blinks immediately and stays so. With the hood latch switch disconnected, and the doors closed/locked, the dash alarm light is solid for the required ~30 seconds and then the light changes to blinking.

I really thought/hoped the switch was at fault, perhaps fouled by paint work or knocked out of adjustment.

However, with the hood latch switch disconnected I still had the alarm randomly go off again that night. Battery disconnected... and now I'm here begging for insights from anyone who has dealt with this issue.

Can I turn off the alarm system? Are there other/better ways to test it? I REALLY prefer to avoid the dealership... not known for integrity or helpfulness.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Either your (hopefully successful) experiences with like occurrences, or knowledge from those more familiar than I.

I appreciate any feedback! Thanks... Cliff

BTW, Battery reads 12.36 vdc at terminals while connected to car. Clean terminals, doors closed and locked.
Hi. I am in Scotland UK and own a 2016 Lexus RX200. I have a very similar problem...alarm is triggering randomly. only at night suggesting outside cooling air temp may be to blame. no signs of break in or tampering. everything else in car healthy. this commenced 2 nights ago with 3 triggers around 1 to 2am. then last night 6 triggers ...3 triggers roughly 15 mins apart at 1 to 2am then another 3 around 4am. had the rear bumper painted 2 weeks ago and all good for 10days but now this. we live in a quiet street and cctv shows no activity anywhere around at these times. Did you trace the root cause of your problems? Like yourself now considering clearing the garage but need to get to the source of the problem. Luckily I have a few weeks remaining on the Lexus warranty

Hi. I live in scotland UK and have a very similar problem. started 2 nights ago, alarm triggers randomly from 1am. 2 nights ago I had 3 events from 1 to 2am rougly 15min intervals. Last night 6 events again 1 thru 2 then 4 thru 5am. car is a 2016 RX and is spotless in all other respects. had the rear bumper painted 2 weeks ago, all good for 12 nights and now this so dont know if this is related. next step is to try garaging it at night, about to clear the garage which will be fun . I would welcome any advice or assistance from anyone with similar experiences. I need a good nights sleep.

Never fixed... pulled the fuse (for quiet) but am missing the horn while driving.

I did take it to the dealership and paid (a lot) for their specialist to troubleshoot. After three hours, the best he came up with... "I'm not sure... you probably need to replace the computer." THAT is about a $1,750 job... so I drive around with no horn. (Fuse still pulled). Frustrating...

... and interesting that your problem also came after some paint work.

Good luck... Cliff

Did the bumper repair folks open any back panel ... hatch release come to mind. I would ask them to recheck all connectors and make sure none of the wires in pinched. I have not had the need to open 3rd gen, but all other Lexus I have worked with have strain relief fasteners on harness and wires. Most mechanics dont put them back and you see issues weeks and moths after the repairs.

Hi guys,
We had the issue with the alarm going off for 3 days with our RX450h 2012 model.
The alarm was activating randomly at night as other people have reported.
In our case the problem turned out to be a big moth, which had somehow entered the car and was flying around and activating the alarm.
We literally had to debug the car

Default I really feel your pain...any Resolution since?

Hi Cliff

I really appreciate your attention to detail, I hope it will benefit others RX450 owners who no doubt one day will be subject to this...as I am.
After reading through your email threads posted, I dread to ask, did you find a solution to it all?
Have just been exposed to two random alarms (3am & 4am) and started searching online for direction, this forum by far has been the most informative.

Regards

CliffLexus has only posted 6 times and the comment you seek a response to was over a year ago. It is highly unlikely Cliff will read and respond to your request as that was his last post on CL.

You may want to search the Audio Security Electronics forum as this probably happens to other Lexus models as they share many components
