My wife's 2012 RX350 is having a strange issue with the NAV system. Recently it seems hell-bent on taking very strange routes to any destination, and seems to want to avoid highways/freeways at all cost. I looked at the various settings available and could not find any that might be causing this change in behavior...any help is much appreciated.

Welcome to CL, bltkmt. Your nav is probably set up to avoid highways. Don't worry, it's a simple fix. Enter a destination. Go to the map screen and select Route on bottom, then Preferences to select/deselect route features. Press OK at the bottom for it to take effect. I'm pretty sure it stays that way until you change it again.

Also make sure you have it set for the correct region, at least if it's a DVD-based unit.

living/driving in NE, there are lot of toll roads.

default setting is "avoid toll road". this will cause havoc on routing. go to setting or after inputting destination, check “toll road” option and routing should improve. Also set your “speed” option. Mentioned before, once destination is inputted, user get three options to choose from.
