From what I understand the suspension, especially the rear, was changed for the third generation. If you're looking for supposedly slightly better handling at the expense of the smoother ride, the third gen. is the ticket. It also has more width in the cargo area because of the design change.
There are guys on here that can give you a more detailed response than that.

BobBass, you pretty much summed it up.
Having owned two Gen 2 RXs (04 and 07), and now a 3rd gen, the latest incarnation is slightly firmer. Move to the F-Sport and the difference is more noticeable. However, Gen 3 feels a lot more planted, surefooted, with less body roll/nose dive, especially the F-Sport. If you have 17" wheels/tires on the Gen 2 going to a Gen 3 RX with 19" wheels for instance, you'll notice a bigger difference in "cushiness" favoring Gen 2.
I do miss the "cutting through soft butter" ride on the Gen 2, but don't miss the "jello legs". The Gen 3 has the best overall compromise in my opinion, and in particular I chose the F-Sport as I enjoy the sportier look and flatter cornering.
Gen 3 is model year 2010 to present day (probably until 2015 inclusive). Test drive it and let us know - pay attention to model (F-Sport or regular RX) and wheel size 18 vs 19, and air tire pressure, as it makes a slight difference. Good luck.

Relax221 if you opt for the 2010-2013 RX also check the tires on the vehicle.I have a 2012 with the 19"wheels and tires.I had the Dealer swap the Dunlops to Michelins.I found that the Michelins were a better smoother ride.
