Default Break-in Period - constant speed

I just bought my 2013 RX, and I'm going out of town on Friday and am worried about the recommendation that you not drive at constant speeds for a long period of time. Well, that's what I'll be doing since I have a 5 1/2-hour drive. My RX has 60 miles on it right now.

Thoughts? I read one post that said that the break-in requirements are really not all that necessary, but then why does Lexus post them in the manual?

I can't avoid the constant speed rec unless I rent a car for my trip.

Thanks.

I wouldnt worry about it too much. You can choose not to use cruise control if it makes you feel better about following the manual

Like Anita said, I would just enjoy the drive. It's not like you're going to be on a dyno machine for several hours. The normal course of traffic will make the difference. But I wouldn't go out and set the cruise at 80mph either.

Thank you for your responses! The drive will be almost all highway, so I guess I'll just vary my speed between 60 and 70 and hope for the best. Normally I would set the cruise to 70.

Every now and then bump the shifter from Drive into a lower gear, one or two gears depending on speed and conditions as desired, for a short period of time. Just remember to put it back after a few minutes. Will help vary the RPMs a bit without being too much of a hinderance.

Years ago, I picked up a brand new car on Friday morning, took it home and packed it for a 5 or 6 hour drive from San Diego to San Francisco. I was extremely vigilant, constantly varying my speed for the entire drive. It was a horrible drive. Had I known the transmission was going to fail less than 2 years later, I wouldn't have bothered.

The moral of my story is .... just enjoy the ride in your new car, and don't sweat the small stuff. You can't anticipate everything, and it probably doesn't matter, anyway. Que sera, sera.

Enjoy your new car! I personally think it's the best "road trip" car EVER, and I hope you like it as much as we love ours!

At 70 in cruise, the RPM's will be so low I wouldn't worry about it. Now 80 or higher may be a different story. I drove my 2010 RX450h to FL right after getting it (two days later) on cruise at 70. 50K now and no issues at all.

In addition, you'll have to stop at least once for a bio break, right? Which will effectively cut the constant drive time to maybe 3 hrs max. Nothing to worry about. I would just enjoy the drive as others have posted!
