Default Need HELP on Changing My Oil

I drain my old oil today on my 2012 RX250 after approx. 8 months and 4,000 miles. (I know, I don't drive that much.)

When attempting to remove the oil filter, I got the end cap off ok, but couldn't not budge the main canister.
I have a end filter wrench that I used previously without any trouble, but today it was on to tight.

My friend suggested wrapping masking tape around the base on the canister, put that didn't work.

I left the old element in, replace the end cap with a new o ring and filled the engine with 0 w 20 synthetic mobil 1.

I'll have the Lexus dealer change my oil next time but the question remains, How long would you wait for your next oil change using a old filer element??

Also, when checking the dip stick after adding new oil, the new oil is clear and hard to see on the dip stick.
What method do you use when checking after oil changes?

Cheers!

Thanks for sending the past reply.

Once the oil is in the engine, can I remove the filter canister with a small amount of oil in it,
or will the engine oil drain out also??

I don't think it will be that bad to wait to the next oil change to change the filter.

I bought the right oil filter wrench which is 64 mm at the Toyota parts store. That is the one that one should use.

Also, next time don't forget to torque it at 20 ft-lbs.

I don't have the answer. When you find out, please let us know.

+ 1 on the filter wrench.
Get the metal one , not the cheap black plastic.

Change that oil immediately!

The filter has a capacity of the amount of deposits it can capture. Putting in new oil without changing the filter will push it to the limit. Why risk contaminating your engine oil? To save $30-40 dollars?

I ordered Toyota/Lexus original filter wrench from Amazon today.
BTW.....I remember the Lexus dealership change my oil the last time for my 10,000 mile program.
They must of had a 400 lb. gorilla doing the oil/filter changes

Thanks for all the reply's

the 400 lb. Gorilla is called a Torque Wrench

Dealers often overtorque these filters. On my CT200h (same filter design) the dealer did the free 10,000 oil change. When I did the 20,000 myself, and I have the 64mm wrench and have done Lexus oil changes since 2005, I had to use a breaker bar with a pipe on the end to get the filter loose!

It was probably a breaker bar and not a torque wrench:

You're not supposed to use torque wrench to over-tighten as it throws off the calibration.

torque:
filter to 19 ft-lbs
oil cap with new o-ring to 9.5ft-lbs
drain plug with new o-ring to about 25 ft-lbs

Yes, I would change the oil again just to change the oil filter. $40 oil change vs $50k car, don't lazy out.

One of the reasons I do my own oil change. They (dealer, Lube Oil, etc) overtighten the oil drain plug and the oil filter. These guys do not use a torque wrench.

When I had my oil changed at the Lexus dealership in Honolulu for the first time a few years back, the service manager let me stand and watch the procedure. The tech recommended the high end filter removal tool which runs around $50-60 bucks, a whole lot better strength and quality to remove the filter housing, especially due to the aluminum expanding due to the heat. I started doing my own oil changes and never had an issue removing the filer housing with that specific SST, would definitely recommend purchasing that specific tool.

But it sounds like the shops are using an impact wrench on these based on how tight they are.
