Default CPO necessary on 2012 RX350 with 29k miles?

Hello all, new member here looking for CPO advice regarding a potential RX purchase. I have 2 options below but would like your opinion.

2010 - AWD - 29K miles - CPO

2012 - FWD - 29K miles - $1.2k less non CPO

Both are optioned & conditioned pretty much identically, BUT only the 2010 is CPO. My question is would the 2012 be a better deal given the newer year and manufacturer warranty still has 2 years to go? therefore no worry regarding CPO? If anything, I can always add extended before 2016. Or does actual CPO have higher advantages?

As long as the vehicle is under the 48 month (from the inservice date) / 50K mile Basic Warranty you can purchase an extended warranty should you care to do so. The 2010 CPO would have a possibly slightly longer warranty being it is 3 years or 100K miles on the vehicle. If you purchased today that would mean the on the 2010 would be good through most of 2016 as you point out. The 2012's warranty would run out 4 years after its inservice date, whatever that was. If it was an early 2012 model year production that would mean it might have been built and sold in late 2011 which would mean the warranty would expire in late 2015. You can check with the dealership about the inservice date on the vehicle in question.

Being you are under the full warranty with both there is little difference beyond the actual features of the vehicle for you to have preference with. Do you need AWD in your area of CA? Do you like the exterior and/or interior colors of one over the other? Purely a personal choice for you. If they are identical in your eyes and you do not need AWD then the 2012 being a newer vehicle would be the better choice, IMO. The higher mileage means nothing as long as it has been serviced on a regular basis. The 2010 was the first model year for the 3rd Generation RX. By 2012 the bugs had been worked out. Also, the 2012 is stated in the Owner's Manual as being able to run on 87 octane while the 2010 states to use 91 or higher octane. What you could get away with using is another story. And, if you are going to hold on to the RX for a long time you can always get that extended warranty. Plenty of discussions here at CL on that topic and where to get it for a discounted price.

Get the newer one. CPO isn't even worth it on a Lexus anyways.

Misquoted a valuable factor. The 2012 non CPO is actually 1.2k less than the CPO 2010. Specs are roughly identical with the 2010 being AWD. That being said, I highly prefer the color combo of the non CPO 2012.

Dean, welcome to the forum and looking at an RX. I'm pretty much of the same opinion as RX330inFL and give the nod to the 2012 with what you've provided. Looks like you prefer it as well. Good luck in your decision.

my rule of thumb on CPO: if you aren't handy in researching/fixing common concerns and/or maintence requirements, buy a CPO. if you are somewhat able to dig through issues and service majority of them on your own, it's probably wasting the added costs of CPO in my opinion

and like others have said, the RX is pretty reliable on the whole..really cant go wrong with either choice. at this point it comes down to personal preference, and it seems as if you've come to a decision as well

I highly prefer the color combo of the non CPO 2012

With the $1200 difference you can get an extended warranty once you have the VIN information. Contact Jerry @ Midwest Toyota. jerryj@midwestsuperstore.com

BTW, with either vehicle you purchase I would make sure they update the maps on the NAV system for you as part of the deal. Just in case.

I'd have to have AWD in rural Iowa, but otherwise, would get the 2012.
