Towing without a tow package
The first link in Anita's post is to a post of mine, but it doesn't mention that my 450H does not have a tow package.
IMO, the tow package is needed only for extremes - if you regularly tow 3500 lbs in searing heat in the mountains.
I doubt I've had my 3000lb trailer at its full weight, but I've towed it 7000+ miles back and forth fr VA to Cape Cod with no temperature problems, plenty of power, brakes work fine.
For the limited towing needs you describe, I'd put a 3500lb hitch on it and go.

RX without factory tow package.
All RX 350’s come from the factory with the tow package wiring installed but not activated. I installed a hitch from E-trailers and ordered the trailer wiring kit number 118255 this kit installed in 15 minutes. The trailer wire runs from the driver side under bumper plug to the hitch but it will not work until to plug in the converter supplied with the kit to the plug located on the passenger side panel located under the small tray under the wall panel just feel around until you find the empty plug hanging there, once you plug the converter in the tow lights will work. Dealers install of complete tow package $1,500.00 if you install the hitch and dealer install converter $600.00 if you buy converter from dealer and you installed it $150.00 and if you buy the wiring kit from E-trailers and install your self $89.50 including shipping. I own 2016 RX

tow prep package
I have a 2013 RX350 with tow package, but it did not come with a tow hitch. I install myself a CURT (#13143) tow hitch and CURT (# 56083) trailer wiring harness. Both were fairly easy to install . Cutting the plastic undercover was a bit tricky.
it does come with instruction and there are lots of videos online.

Look under the rear bumper where the tow hook is on the left hand side. If you look into the cavity that the tow hook comes out of, you may be able to see a grey, square 4 pin connector. This is the connector that is installed on all RX350's that have the tow prep package.
etrailer.com sells a wiring adapter that plugs into this square 4 pin connector to expose a flat 4 pin connector.

If you see the square 4 pin connector, it's prepped for towing
