Cover the back bumper some soft fabric (towel, blanket, etc.) to prevent marring your paint.
This position also gives you a chance to check the lift gate closure safeties.
Just kidding. Don't auto power down on your legs!!

Speaking from experience, David?
The tailgate is curved so that piece takes care of the space the tonneau cover can't reach. On the previous gen RX, there was an extra flap on the front of the tonneau cover. I don't know how that was supposed to work. But at least it doesn't automatically retract when the tailgate is opened like it used to. Now that would've annoyed me

Lay down on your back in the cargo area, with your legs dangling over the back bumper. Have someone manually lower (not auto power) and hold the lift gate down so you can push the clips of the extension into the lift gate. This position give you the proper position to force those little devils into those holes. Sounds goofy I know, but it gives you a mechanical advantage over standing and twisting around pushing above your head. This position seems to work on model years 2010-12.
