purchasing question
Hi,
this is my first time posting so let me know if this is the wrong thread for this.
I am looking into purchasing a good condition 2013 RX350 with 20200 miles as a CPO from a NY Dorshel lexus dealer. The dealer is asking for $38000 for it. I checked it out and it's clean except for 1 chip on the front and read bumper. The tires also seem worn out. I have a feeling the brakes are close to end of life too.
I checked the website that display price and I am getting confusing results.
Edmunds indicate dealer cpo should be $37771
Truecar indicate a great price is $39000
kbb indicate $42000
1)
I am totally confused as to what I should be paying for this car?
edmunds also indicated that the trade in value for this car might be $31000
Since this is a dorshel dealer, the sales guy said they don't negotiate since their price is already lower than the competition so I am not sure how much leeway I have.
2)
The CPO warranty is 3yrs/100000 miles when you buy the car but it still technicaly has original manufacturer warranty 21month/30000 miles left on it so with CPO purchase, all I am getting is one more year of warranty which is a little sad. Is that normal or can I ask the CPO warranty to start after the manufacturer warranty ends.
3) The guy also indicated that a 6yr extended warranty (until 2020) would cost $3000. That seems a lot of money for three additional months.
4) Wouldn't it be cheaper for me to get a regular non cpo used car with the extended warranty?
Thanks for any help,
Amish

How many miles a year do you plan to drive, and/or do you keep your car for more than 3 years typically?
If under 12,000 miles a year, and 3 years or less - you may do better leasing a new RX. Just something to consider.
I understand your CPO question - I thought Lexus used to add it to the existing warranty. BMW does, so it is 3 years after the current warranty expires. Seems that for under 50,000 miles, we are not getting a good deal on the CPO.
Does anyone know, does the basic warranty transfer for a used Lexus like it does for other manufacturers, so paying for 3 years/100,000 miles on a vehicle with 20,000 miles may be questionable or something worth asking them to remove the price for?

Lexus CPO cars are 3 years/100,000 miles from date of sale. Initial Manufacturer Warranty is not transferable.
The price he quoted you for an extended warranty is way too high. With it being CPO, I wouldn't worry about an extended warranty, but totally up to you. Extended warranties are negotiable. Being CPO, I'm not sure if you can buy a Lexus extended warranty after the sale. You can always buy 3rd-party extended service contracts, but I know nothing about those.
I don't remember all the differences between 2013 and 2014+, but Siri Hands Free was added starting at the 2014 model (handy if you have an iphone). The exterior of the car is the same though.
The real issue buying used is you don't truly know how the other owner took care of it. Make sure and look at a carfax and/or the Lexus service history of the car (ask your sales guy for both). If the owner had it serviced at any Lexus dealer, they'll have record of it and you can see the service history.
As for the brakes, that's an easy check from one of their mechanics. Tires too.
Lexus CPO states tires must have minimum tread depth of 5/32". Brakes: Minimum of 6mm of pad left.
As for the price of the car. Prices are negotiable. Granted they may only be $400 negotiable, but they are negotiable. It depends on many factors (how many RX's they have, how many CPO RX's they have, how quickly they sell them, etc, etc).
I'm not a car salesman and I know nothing about the process. I honestly dislike sales people with a passion, but we all must deal with them.
It's hard to say if the $37,000 price is a good one. We don't know the options of the car and we obviously haven't seen/heard/driven the car.
Note that it supposedly costs a dealer $1,000 to get the CPO certification. I don't know how much of that is true.

I am by NO means an expert on this, but this is what would be asking based on my own driving/maintenance experience … 1. When were the tires replaced? (while CPO standards MAY let those squeak by, 20K is avg for replacing tires) 2. When were the brakes replaced (again, same reasoning) …assuming they haven't and you want this car, I would try to negotiate those two items…
Also - $3000 for the 6 year/100K warrantee seems high…I just purchased that warrantee for a new 2015 RX and it was less than that
I have also found KBB pricing to be pretty off…Edmunds sounds closest
Good luck! Let us know how it goes

A couple of thoughts:
1. I believe that CPO is 3 yrs & TO 100K miles (not 100K from today's odometer).
2. CPO should have nearly new tires, nearly new brakes, and a certified 100+point inspection. You get a written report of all these items plus the Lexus maintenance history.
3. The only really reliable sources of price are recent e-bay, Craig's list, and (especially) Autotrader listings.
KBB, etc. are essentially a sales tool for the industry.
4. 3 months is a LONG time on the dealer's lot. Decide on a price you are willing to pay and (literally) walk away if the dealer demands a penny more. There are LOTS of RXs available.
Good luck!
