Great thread.

You're supposed to change the diff fluid more often if you tow a lot, I don't know where I read this.

This is of course a cheap DIY.

Even if you don't tow and get all your service done at a dealer, make sure you get the diff fluid serviced as it's usually under an hour of labour and like $30 CDN worth of fluids, simple drain and fill.

What is the part number for the crush washer?
Is it 12157-10010 like mentioned in the Highlander forum?
Does anyone know?

Question The Rear Differential Oil Recommendation.

I’m trying to figure out what is the best option for the rear differential oil.

The Toyota oil is $40 a liter, I think I can get better oil for less.

The manual states: LT 75W-85 GL-5. I understand the 75W-85 GL-5 part, but what does the “LT” stand for? Does anyone know?

Do I need the “Limited Slip” type or not? For a quick test I lifted the rear end, and when I spun one wheel one way, the other went the opposite direction. The internet says that this suggest no limited slip oil is needed, but it also says that limited slip oil will not hurt non-limited slip differentials, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

What oil do you use?

Just get Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. 75W90. You will be fine. I have been running it for over 50,000 miles and 2 changes in my RX350. The difference between an upper viscosity of 85 and 90 is negligible and will not make any difference regarding performance, reliability or mileage. LT may mean Light Truck, but I would not worry about it.
It is available at most auto parts stores and probably Wal-Mart. You do not need any limited slip additive.

Most of the Toyota/Lexus OEM lubricants are made by Exxon/Mobil.

If you really want to do a deep dive, start reading and searching the forums at https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum.../forum_summary

I know this is an old thread but would like to how many bottles of 75W-90 I need to purchase to change transfer case & rear differential? I believe each bottle is 1qt or 32 oz.

1.1 pints for Diff and 1.7 pints for TC for my 2015 RX350.

If I recall correctly , I bought two bottles of Mobile 1, and did not use it all. I believe when you drain , you don't get all the fluid out.

My manual says 0.8 and 0.5 quarts.

RealWing's numbers were pints not quarts, so you need 2 bottles

It said 75w-85 but people recommend 75w-90.

I use what Lexus recommends. The genuine Toyota oil is a little more than aftermarket oil, but I only need 2 quarts every five years, so why not get the right stuff.

Where can I find the transfer case? It's in the front or rear? I know where to find the differential fluid.

This is for the Highlander, but it is exactly the same on the RX. The transfer case is near the front. Also look on youtube for either RX350, Highlander or Venza.
