Default Moose and 2010 RX450h

I had the misfortune to have a mouse with two yearlings rub out in the dark from my right and didn't have enough time to stop. The cow moose was so tall that the impact knocked her down hard on my hood crushing the hood down to the engine. The windshield shattered but held, the wiper housing was crushed and depressed, the roof took some of the hit as well. The moonroof looked okay but after that it was heavily dented in and dirty. I wonder if it went completely over my car. The shark fin was intact.

Car was totaled with over $20,000 in damages. Air bags did not deploy. Except for being covered in glass I didn't even have a cut.

Great car for protection and also lucky to survive the hit.

Loved the car, even more now that it saved me. Now looking for a rep, acement.

The most important thing is that you were safe and unharmed. Thank God for that!

Glad to see you were well protected.

Agree about you being okay. Lighter note glad the RX was totaled. You would not have wanted that fixed.
From the auto insurance journal: An estimated 1.23 million deer-vehicle collisions occurred in the U.S. between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012, costing more than $4 billion in vehicle damage, and resulting in 200 deaths according to State Farm, the nation’s leading auto insurer. You might be the only stat however on moose damage.

svidas, I'm glad you're ok. That damage is incredibly scary. To add to Freds430 comments, do not use high beams to scare deer off. The light temporarily blinds them. Not sure about moose though. Good luck finding a replacement vehicle. Another RX possibly?

Moose was dispatched by Conservation officer in the ditch. I didn't go into details but assume at least broken leg(s). I was not using brights.

I am looking at another hybrid - this time a 2013 RX450h. Listed at $38,000. How much dickering in price do you think is possible?

That's very unfortunate man but as long as you're okay, you should be glad, could have been worse, Lexus proved its safety feature. You should soo take that moose for BBQ.

Don't know about a 2013 but we just bought a 2015 RX450h with 22,000 miles. It is certified and the Lexus dealer just put on a set of new Michelin's. It has nav, blind spot monitoring and the 19 inch tires. It is like your old one white with the parchment interior and bamboo pearl trim. We paid $44,000.

svidas, that's great you're considering another 450h. Price sounds about right for that year. Problem is hybrids are more difficult to come by. But it's almost the end of the month. Use it is to your advantage. And possibly they're looking to move the RXh off their lot with the 4RX arrival coming. I notice that happening at a local dealer. Doesn't hurt to give them a number and see what they come back with. Good luck.

Poor moose. I didn't want to ask but figured the worst based on the damage to your RXh. Maybe it was a good thing the shattered windshield hampered your view of the events as they unfolded. Again, I'm so happy you're not hurt. Your skill to maintain control in that situation is also to be commended.

And I should have said any headlights in my earlier post. Deer aren't able to adjust to light like us. I'm surprised at the amount of people who use high beams when they come across them. It literally blinds them. Also other drivers. Having LED headlights myself, I know they're not that bright

You are very lucky. I used to work with a guy who is an attorney in Maine now and several years ago he defended Volvo for a claim of safety design defect from a fatal Moose collision. Similar but worse damage than yours because the Moose went through the windshield and into the car!

Wow glad you are ok. Sorry to hear the moose had to be put down, especially with the two little ones in tow.

Clutchless - I wonder if the Volvo claim was for a car vs SUV. The extra height and also windshield angle would make it less likely for it to go through the windshield.
