2010 RX350: Where is the oil cooler?
So I just bought a 2010 RX350. I have been doing a lot of research on the various oil leaks of the previous models. A lot of good info on this forum. The VVTI oil line leak was fixed on the 2010's and is an all metal line, but there was also the oil cooler line leaks on the 2GR engines.
I thought that the 2010 had the same 2GR engine as the 2009's and earlier which had the oil cooler leak, but my engine seems different. I can't locate the oil cooler nor the rubber hoses that cause the aforementioned problems.
My engine, the 2010, seems to have a lot of space where the 2009's oil cooler and rubber lines are. Does the 2010 RX350 not have any of the dreaded oil leak issues? Where is the oil cooler?
This is my 2010 RX350
This is basically the same view, but on a 2009 RX350.

You only have this oil cooler if you have the towing package. To determine if you have the towing package, look inside the driver side front wheel fender liner. If there are air vents at the front lower part (for the transmission oil cooler) then you have the towing package. If not, then you do not have this oil cooler.
The rubber oil cooler hoses are right next to the oil filter. Look at this link from ToyotaNation which covers replacement of them on a Highlander, which has the same engine. It has photos of the oil cooler so you can get an idea of what it looks like. Too bad Lexus only gave us a longer warranty and did not step up to replace them. The problem is if it fails on the highway you are likely to pump all your oil out and seize the engine before you can shut it down! I plan to replace mine in the Spring when it warms up. I bought the new metal line on eBay for about $75. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/12...ng-points.html
FYI you do not have to remove all the stuff he removed to get at the cooler. He made it much more complicated because he lacked the proper tools to access the bolts.

Thank you for the reply! I appreciate the help.
I checked the drivers side fender for vents and I found some.
however, I look in that area and there doesnt appear to be anything there really.
Maybe this, plus the missing oil cooler means I dont have the tow package? I might be in the clear for death by oil-explosion?

Question?
I thought having the tow package means you have a hitch in the rear bumper cover, so why use the fender vents as a indicator for the tow package/oil cooler if you can just peak at the rear bumper for the hitch or gap in the bumper if the hitch was removed?
What am I missing?

Cooler hose photos
You are looking in the wrong place. Lay on the ground, slide under the front bumper and look up. Find the oil filter, it is toward the passenger side. The cooler hoses are nearby. If you go to the Toyota link I posted you have to scroll down about 30 photos to find one showing it. Looking at the photos I copied from there, it is near the silver can thing in the center of the photo. The other photos have his hand near it and compare the old and new hoses. However, maybe you do not have it....

Yeah, thanks for the replies guys. I think I have concluded that the oil cooler is indeed not there. In the photos you posted, it should be to the left of the exhaust manifold heat shield. I just have an empty space and no hoses around it nor around the oil filter.
As a side note, I have some of the other hoses pictured, but they are in a slightly different position, and instead of yellow tape around the one that is near the oil cooler (in the pictures you posted), I have green tape. Would be interesting to know the color coding (if it is indeed color coding at all).
Again, thanks for your help, all. It made working through this process much easier!

That is funny.
I found my RX original window sticker in my owners manual, and I do not have the tow prep package, however I would have passed on that option as well the original owner.
To be honest I can not see myself using the RX350 to safely tow anything any way.
Maybe a ATV or small U-haul trailer, but not much else unless the tow package would have included self-leveling rear suspension.
Hence why Lexus probably do not even include a hitch with the tow package.
Ok, no more thread jacking with my opinion since some of you out there do tow with the RX and I am sure very successfully.

I have a question on my 2010 RX 350 with AWD & TOW Prep Package as written on the Purchase Window Sticker. It is rated for a 3500 lb Towing Capacity.
I have the hitch & a 4 point wire connector installed by the previous owner. I will have eazy Weight distributing hitch & Sway Control, and also a Brake Controller installed before Towing.
I want to tow a Fiber Glass 17' Travel Trailer, the 17' includes the Tongue length, it is made by Escape Trailers .com, has electric brakes of its own . The Dry weight is around 2300 lbs & wet as Loaded would be around 3000 lbs with a Tongue Weight of 300 lbs(1/10th).
Do you think I can safely do it from British Columbia, Canada to Central Florida, the route has some mountain passes also. I would also be using it to Camp regularly.
Any and all feed back is welcome & thanks in advance. I am sorry for hijacking the Thread but I thought this thread dealt closely with the info I needed.
Best regards
