A turn signal has only one function. It is the first step in interrupting the other driver’s personal safety by asking permission and mutually agreeing to allow something unexpected to occur. If the receiving driver sees the signal, but refuses to acknowledge it, the decision making process gets complicated. The result is a mental standoff that is escalated with a time factor at maybe 60 to 70 MPH that was not expected. The consequences of a wrong decision can be deadly.
The variable number of turn signal flashes appears to be the result of a product designer who is more interested in bling and who does not understand human behavior. In short, the designer had no “what if?” scenarios where the receiver did not comply within the 5 or 10 flashes. In fact, if the designer understood the human factors of behavior, this feature would have been dropped.
You can confirm this observation simply by counting the number of times you asked for permission from another driver and been refused. Does one really think that diddling with a programmable turn signal is going to change the behavior of non-participating drivers?
