Default Rear Brake Pad Replacement Cost

Need to get my pads replaced and dealer quoted $360 to replace pads and resurface rotors. Am I getting bent over?

I might be bashed on this but get new rotors instead it will be almost as much as resurfacing them. Ive never had good experience with resurface work on any car. Could have been bad jobs....

Any more, rotors are built with tighter tolerances, and a resurfaced rotor will generally be very close to minimum thickness when it starts back its "new" life with the new pads. The implication here is that the rotor will generally get too thin before the pads wear out again and you'll end up with vibration or pulsing brakes when the rotors get hot during use. Generally, it's just better to replace the rotors AND the pads unless the rotors have minimal wear on them.

The one piece we're missing, though, in answering your question... How many miles do your current rotors and pads have on them?

Back to you question.... No, you're not getting bent over unless the rotors simply do not have enough wear on them to justify replacement. My daughter just had the front pads and rotors replaced on her '07 Volvo S60 at an independent Volvo shop, and it was $400. Aside from the fact I was going out of town, I could have done the work for her for less than $200 (high quality parts cost) in a couple of hours.

Brakes are so very easy to work on and you can save tons of money learning how to do it yourself (assuming you have some basic wrenching skills, basic tools, a place to do the work, and can afford spending a couple of hours to do the work). You could generally cut your expense at least by 50%, and sometimes by 75%.

Here's what I paid for our RX450h parts to get both front and rear pads and rotors replaced:

Being in CA, you should be fine with having rotors machined. However, living in the rust-belt, original rotors had suffered too much oxidation that I decided to pitch them.

Roughly speaking, pads are $50 and O'Riley will machine rotors for $16 each. So, if you were to DIY, you're looking at less than $100. Add 3 hours of labor @80/HR and you'll be right on the dot of $360.
