Pricing for 2015
Hi all, looking at a used 2015 rx350 with 30k miles. Awd, premium package, park assist, nav, etc. original Msrp of 51k. They would like 32k. Open to your thoughts on best price?

Do some searching at www.Edmunds.com, or www.cars.com, or CarMax to get an idea of similar vehicles asking prices. Not sure if TrueCar covers used, but worth a look.

Got one yesterday with Premium, Comfort & Luxury packages, plus AWD, NAV, Adaptive Cruise Control & Parking Sensors with 28K miles & a clean Carfax for $32.5. Very nice condition & we're very pleased with the car & the price--they tend to be expensive here in the snowy (not this year) Rocky Mountain region.
The one you're looking at seems to be a few thou high to me, but hey, what do I know about prices in NC?

BTW I wouldn't worry about the original msrp. All that matters is the value of the car now, and what it will be worth when you are done with it. Extra features don't really do much for a cars value when used. Tech seems to get outdated quickly.
I'd be worried about how far over your trade in value you are paying.
Fair purchase price on kbb is near 28k. I wouldn't go over that.once it's in your hands it's worth 22.5k. I'd try and get as close to 4k out the door over that as possible

its all about the market your purchasing in i know for example in Florida a 2012 RX 350 fully loaded would be about 17000 to 20000 depending on what kind of dealership its being sold at.
however the same vehicle up in Utah has a market value currently of between 20000 and 22000

Find the listing on carguru and it will have their marketvalue right there telling you how good of a deal it is. can also bring up the graphs to tell you where it lies compared to other listings. ultimately you need to be happy with the car and final condition compared to your standards may throw off the valuation

CPOs - Worth the money?
I am considering going with a CPO. Are they worth $6k? I don't have a Lexus dealership in my town, so I am not sure if an extended warranty will be useful/convenient. Are CPOs really more reliable than a used car (that has been evaluated by a mechanic)? Thanks.

The lexus rx is rhe bread and butter of lexus, so it is already extremely reliable. But no, economically, if you arent going to be able to use the included maintenances you are losing out on perhaps 1/3rd the benefits of the cpo. It would be like flying first class but not using free bags and decling eating or drinking the included food and beverages.
It isnt specifically that one can tell that a cpo is more reliable or not but that, it is just a bet by the dealer. For the customer its that it passed some a checklist and if a problem occurs they will cover it for the period of time.
Yes there are some requirements to checkout but basically all rxes after 3years should pass those unless abused or defective (as its stillunder original warrantty). that theres no accidents and cosmetically it has to be in better shape. Overall a cpo is the dealer paying toyota corporate around 2k to cover the cpo benefits, then also maybe dumping in 1.5k in tires, service, and detail job then as you said sell it for 6k more.
So of course a dealer will cherrypick the best cars so they can get make the extra profit. They arent going to invest into a car more if they can avoid it. They are also going to get through thst checklist as fast and cheapest as they can.
If a car isn't cpoed you may wonder why it doesn't qualify. often it maybe a cosmetic issue that is ok for you, or it wrnt over mileage limits or missed maintenance or you are private partying or not shopping at a lexus dealer
If you want to go outside of cpo you should look for cars that have at least a few months left on the original warranty. You drive the car for some time to get used to it. Then you go back and fix any small issues that you notice before warranty runs out. After that you only go to your independent dealer snd dont pay stealership prices.

this article sums it up for me... for an extra thousand or 2 its probably worth it depending on the terms. for 6k you may as well take your chances and save the money. not even close to worth it

A Lexus dealer may have already CPO-ed his inventory, so you cannot just go to the dealer and say please take off the CPO and take $6k off the price. The work has already been completed.
The inventory that is outside the lexus dealer network might not have what you are looking for; as the main channel for 3year old clean cars are Lease Returns which go back to the dealer and dealer network first, not to the open market.

Being 250 miles from the nearest Lexus dealer, the entire CPO/warranty thing holds little interest to me. For sure I don't wish to pay an extra $6K for an extended warranty that I can buy for $1500-2000. We just bought our 2015 RX from a Toyota dealer, where it was a lease return. This was allowed by Lexus because of the before mentioned distance to the nearest Lexus dealer. The Toyota dealer paid off the lease & kept the car to sell rather than ship it to a Lexus dealer. Plus, we still have about 18 months left on the factory warranty.

I personally wouldn't do it. I have traveled some pretty big distances to buy cars. If I certainly wouldn't pay 6k over what a car is worth because it was the only one in the vicinity. I do not know know where the person who asked the question lives, nor do i know what the inventory is like in that location, but I think patience and effort should allow them to find the car they really want

The 6k figure is just getting mentioned because Luap mentioned it.
However, some of that $6k is already invested back into the car. I would say $2000 worth of work has gone into the car, of which $800 should just be new tires, then add checklist, maintenance, and then recondition and detail it up.
So more realistically, it is more like a $4k difference at purchase time. Additionally all prices are up for negotiation.
The CPO post-sale benefits, I'd value at $600 for the services, as you should run into 1 brake fluid exchange. and perhaps $1500 for the warranty extension and extra bits.
So the valuation of the package in my mind is about $4100.
It also depends on how you value these things in terms if you consider it out of pocket price for the exact same service at the dealer, or you paying the lowest price for equivalent service at your independent.
So really I'd consider $1900 on the table you could negotiate for.
Once you bring that down, the remainder is in exchange for

Once you bring that down, the remainder is in exchange for
- car in better condition (often cosmetic) , and potentially more selection
- you able to satisfy your maintenance and warranty by Lexus corporate at any Lexus dealer versus restrictions and paperwork in third party warranties
- improving your relationship with Lexus, which can get you goodwill, versus if you just walked off the street.
- remainder is profit for the dealer
