Dead transmission

Thank you for your response regarding your symptoms. I agree, now that you have a new transmission, you should keep it a while. It should last and you should know what to look for next time. Being that you drive primarily highway, I think you just got a bad tranny from the factory - they definitely shouldn't fail so early.
It's fine to go into S on the highway. It will perform a couple downshifts but it is designed to do that if you mash the gas (passing on a country road, for example). I agree that your description of how the tranny performs and the gear indication is correct - it doesn't display the actual gear, the number it shows is the highest gear you allow the trans to shift up to. So you can shift up from s5 to s6 and it may not upshift if you're on a hill or it's fighting a strong headwind. I drove manual transmissions for the last 15 years and spend too much time concentrating on what gear my auto trans is in
It shows the gear that I have selected and I can make that go up or down by moving + or -, but it doesn't show the actual gear of the transmission.
Not sure if its a good idea to go in S while driving on the highway since the default gear is 4. Don't want another dead transmission.
