we bought a preowned 13 RX with the 3.0 engine. Well, just did a 2000mile (it now has 51K miles on it) round trip to the Mayo Clinic and back and have been noticing valve damage in the form of blue smoke upon start up. We are 1 yr into our preowned warranty and purchased their additional warranties (cash talks). Are they likely to try to squirm out of a valve job? I can’t tell you what awesome people we deal with at our local dealership but haven’t tried to get this much work out of them. Just asking “generally speaking”
thx

Cant say much about how your case will be handled by your Lexus dealer. All I can do is share some insight
1. Oil consumption .. the desired value is 'zero' but all manufacturers have a range in which it may be considered OK. It can be as high as a quart every week on certain German cars.
2. Keep in mind the dealership will always make money. They will get the repair cost through the owner or the manufacturer or the warranty provider. Very few times they will do things on their dime.
3 At times the manufacturer will give the parts for free and the owner then pays fort the labor.
4. Dealer is considered as the technical expert in determining the problem [Manufacturer or the warranty provider will talk to them] ... need to know who you should have in your court.

I hope this engine is “more reliable” then what the valves are indicating....51,000 miles is not a lot for Japanese craftsmanship
ty for your reply, I didn’t like reading it but your just the messenger and I appreciate it.

Not sure what you mean by valve damage. Grey/blue smoke puffing out under acceleration is blow by oil burn out and normally is contributed to two factors: leaking valve stem seals or lots of carbon build up on piston rings and their inability to seal cylinders anymore. Possibly a head gasket leaking oil into combustion chamber.
You are out of warranty. Find a reputable local indy shop specializing in Toyotas. Call and get estimate. It is worth paying for diagnostic. Then, call dealer and find out how much job will cost. I was surprised several times to find out that dealer is actually more competitive pricing wise vs indy guy. And you are more guaranteed to have good parts.
Another way to do this is to find a reputable mobile mechanic. They will come to you and are normally significantly less than shops. Significantly. I normally go to local parts store that knows me and ask - do you have one? They always have one. I'd ask - do you trust him? Yes, he works on MY cars all the time. Bingo!
Oh, and if you were to keep driving like this, you'll kill your cat.

I apologize...I typed valves, I meant seals. It’s a “Lexus Pre-Owned”, I believe that’s what they call it. It has THEIR extended warranty on it because they sold it.
“We are 1 yr into our pre-owned warranty and purchased their additional warranties...”

Did they sell the '13 with 3.0 engine? I thought there was only the 3.5 or the Atkinson 3.5 on the hybrids? Are you able to pull up the service history for the vehicle on lexus.com? I'd check the oil change intervals that the previous owner was following. This might lead you to a little better understanding of what is happening when you go to bat for warranty work.

They all have the 3.5 engine. I bet it just needs a good induction (intake system) cleaning then an oil change.
