Timing belt replacement -Should I?
My Lexus 2010 RX is just over 160k miles. Just read through the timing belt thread on the 2nd Gen.. I have never had it replaced and now I am quite nervous that I should. From what was posted, it sounds like you should do the water pump at the same time. So my question is... can I take it to my "oil change" guy or do I need to take it to the dealership? And what is the price range for the timing belt, and then the timing belt and water pump? Not my specialty dealing with the lingo, but I need to know enough to not have a crazy bill. And, I think it sounds like I should run- not walk to get my timing belt replaced. (Second RX, love my Lexus)

Your car uses a timing chain. No need to change the chain if you follow routine maintenance. The water pump on the other hand needs to be changed if they start to weep coolant of if the bearing is shot. Also needs to be aware of broken timing chain guides. Also, better check the external oil cooler hoses and verify that the rubber hoses were replaced with metal replacement hose.

Also this engine is common to many Toyota & Lexus vehicles so any independent that works on Toyotas can change your water pump. No need to pay higher dealer prices.

I have to say I get the same amenities from my local Toyota dealer, and pay (generally) about half as much as the Lexus dealer charges.

Why do some Lexus owners deny that they drive a Toyota vehicle

Ah, but it's not a "Toyota." Lexus falls under the Toyota corporate umbrella, but the engineering and amenities are enhanced, simply because the engineering team had a larger budget to work with. That's worth a lot to many folks. AND my local Lexus dealer really is upscale. Even the doughnuts taste better.

As far as the dealer aspect, there's no doubt that the Lexus dealerships and generally fancier than the Toyota ones. It just depends on personal preference and how much that is worth to you. I'd rather eat an average doughnut and sit in an average waiting room and get my car repaired for half the price. I'm all about value, so to me, a nicer waiting room isn't worth paying double for. It's worth something to me, but nowhere near what they're charging for it. I also hate to feel like I'm being taken advantage of. That's personally what it feels like to me, again because of my personal perspective on the value of what you're getting... benefit/cost.
As far as the Lexus to Toyota car value, that's another thing.
