change brake pad on 2015 RX 350
Just had 50k mileage maintenance for Lexus 2015 RX 350 at dealer. They told me both of the front and back brake are at 2mm. Both brakes need to be replaced and motor to be resurfaced. The quote is $990!
I called a regular auto shop which I used for my Honda Accord service and they quoted me around $500 for replacing both front/back brake and resurge motor on the Lexus, it's half price of what the dealer quoted. The difference is huge, what might be the catch or dealer just over quoted?
Thanks for any advice.

The dealer is way over-charging for such work. Brake jobs are one of the biggest profit repairs. Your typo should state resurface rotors. However, at 50,000 miles you may want to consider just replacing the rotors. There is often little price difference and new rotors will last longer.
Brake jobs are easy to do for a skilled mechanic, and if they charge per the rate book, and mark up the parts a lot, they can get to $900.
Go to your local guy for $500. Your car will stop just as well and odds are the pads will last as long as the originals. You could ask your mechanic if he is using ceramic pads as that is the OEM type, but many companies make ceramic pads now. Also, ask him if he will resurface or replace the rotors of if he thinks it is needed at all. Many times dealers oversell stuff you do not need as they have sales quotas to meet.
If the dealer did not replace your brake fluid ( bleed your brakes) make sure your local mechanic does this as part of the brake job.

Rotors and new pads aren't actually pricey for these cars and I know 4 people around me that could do the job in a couple hours for a case of beer if I don't feel like tackling it. Brakes are quite easy and pretty much the same on most cars.

new rotors!
for the price of new rotors vs turning the old ones, i would get new rotors if they need attention. The Rx is a fairly heavy car and turned rotors will warp , fairly quickly i would think. when i do brakes i always get two sets of pads to one set of rotors. SOMETIMES 3 but i drive with as little brake usage as possible(no not dangerously so).your mechanic will be able to assess whether you can get another run with the old rotors. Good luck.

Brakes are almost as easy as an oil change. 4 Bolts and everything only goes back in 1 way. Its almost impossible to mess up unless you have no common sense what so ever lolllll. But if you never turned a wrench I personally wouldn't recommend trying on your own unless you have a lot of time and a place to leave the car in case you cant finish in time. Some shops will charge you almost 900$ also be ware.

glad i can do brakes myself. new centric premium coated rotors and raybestos eht pads are about $220+shipping from rockauto. beware, careless mechanics can rip the caliper piston dust boot if not careful.
