Default Oil change interval question

Hi all, i just happen to notice something strange to us Canadian owner of the rx350.

I am aware that in the US. Lexus recommend regular oil change interval of 6000 miles.
However, in Canada it is recommended at every 8000 km...
If i do the math, 6k miles = 9600 km..

essentially, for every 5 service in US, the canadian wants us to 6 oil changes..

Its the same damn car, why 2 different service interval?

I had my car for about 4 years doing this 8000 km oil change thing.

I think i will be fine with 9600 km per oil change.

Any thoughts?

I believe the US is now at 10,000 mile /16,000 km
my Chevy 5.3 L truck has an oil change indicator , usually it comes on at at 12,000 -13,000 km, and GM uses a blend oil
I will go around 16,000 km or once a year
our use Amsoil oil and go with 25,000 miles/40,0000 km or once a year

It depends on what oil & filter you use!

I am sure the US oil change interval is 10,000 miles.

25K miles between oil changes???

I've see the Mobil One Synthetic Annual Protection guaranteed for 20K miles. Still too many miles between oil changes IMHO.

I wouldn't do it beyond 10K miles MAX.

8000km =4970miles service schedule which matches pretty much to the us schedule.

please note both corrections to some misconceptions in the original post

>1) us service interval is 5000miles

>2) lexus recommended schedule is oil change every other service when done at the dealer with syn oil (16 mega meters or 10000 miles)

you can verify by picking a us based dealer or ca based dealer online and looking through the schedule service tool that most have.

Even on our then 99 RX300 I did oil changes at 12-15 000 miles. With Amsoil. Engine was so tight, oil barely turned light caramel in that period. There are oils guaranteed for 25 000 miles. Same Amsoil. Some Mercedes models do oil change at 60 000 miles.

To OP question. Maintenance minder does NOT know what oil you run on. It simply calculates mileage. Most minders are preset from factory to whatever, usually 5 000 miles and light simply comes up.
Ever since 2004 I stopped paying attention to MM and pay attention to oil level and appearance. But I use only best oil available and best filter available. MOF, you can go that long easily, if you replace filter during high mileage run. That's what 25 000 miles Amsoil wants you to do.
Of course, I am a DIY guy, you folks go to dealers and such.. I have MY opinion on this and it didn't fail me so far. I even reset my MM to 6 000 miles on wife's 350. So it annoys us less.

When looking into this before (Lexus Canada vs Lexus USA service intervals), I believe we found that in the US, they recommend 12 months/10k miles for normal use. They specify 6 months/5k miles in special conditions. They list the special operating conditions in the manual. One states something about routine driving in temperatures less than 32 degrees F for short distances.

I believe they are being more conservative in Canada, basically considering driving in Canadian winters to be a special condition. Probably makes more sense in places like Edmonton than it does in Vancouver. However I believe I recently read that Lexus will be lengthening the service intervals in Canada.

Default How often we need to oil change on Rx350 F Sport (2013)

Hi All,

Bought a used Rx350 F sport ( 2013 ) with 60K miles on it.

With my old car (2001) we used to get oil change every 4-6K miles.

How often do you get your oil change for the Rx350 (2013) ?

Thanks
John

The owner's manual calls for every 10,000 miles. It takes 0W-20, which is always a full synthetic oil. Do some searching and you will see that many think that is too long and will change it sooner. I prefer about 7,000 miles as it is the last few thousand where the oil really deteriorates.
However, Lexus set the maintenance warning light to come on every 5,000 miles back when that was the oil change interval and they did not change it when the oil change interval was extended as they wanted to have owners return to the dealer more often for useless maintenance checks so as to increase their profit while you ate "free" pastries etc. It is a good idea to rotate your tires that often, but anyplace can do that and the routine maintenance checks for a lot less money than the dealer. This vehicle is basically a Toyota Highlander mechanically (also a twin to the Sienna and almost to the ES and Camry) so every shop is familiar with working on them.

There are many threads here with arguments over oil change intervals.

I highly recommend you get your transmission fluid changed now as it is not really lifetime (unless you count the warranty) and you want to avoid the risk of failure when you reach around 100,000 miles.
You should have a Lexus or Toyota dealer do it so you get the right fluid and because it has a complicated fluid level adjustment and they have the software and experience to do it right. Some dealers will do this service and some will say they cannot touch it as it is sealed. Avoid those dealers and call around to find one that will do it. I had it done at a Toyota dealer. The transmission is the same in both Lexus and Toyota.

Enjoy your new ride.

Thanks for the quick reply.

That is what even i was wondering when the manual says to change oil every 10K miles, what is the maintenance light come up every 5K miles. Luckily there is tweak online to turn off the maintenance light.

When we went to a Lexus dealer last year for a 50K mile service (oil change), they charged $180 just for oil change and gave us another $700 big laundry list We ignored everything and just got the oil changed. Wondered what a rip off from Lexus dealer service.

There is a Toyota service dealer closer to our home, this time planning to take to them for oil change (60K). But I'm sure all dealers will pull their long to do list for sure.

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks once again

The brake fluid should be changed every 3 years as it absorbs water, but this is true for any vehicle.
Not to repeat this too much, but have them change the transmission fluid and consider changing the differential and transfer case fluids at this time. Once those 3 are done you should not have to touch them again for another 60,000 and the initial change is the most important one for getting the original fluid out and preventing additional wear. Think of it as insurance.
