Default transmission issue? need advice

Hi guys, I tired searching the forums but really didn't find the same issue, maybe its been discussed. I picked up a high mileage rx350 2013, from a lexus dealer, its at 166k miles or so, but car looks brand new from inside and outside. It ran ok for 1st month or so.

I got this as a beater to take to work and some MTB local trails with my little boys. The issue is at times it feels like it revs on a gear higher than normal. Almost seems like you are driving and going to 3rd instead of third gear you go to netural for a less than a sec (the rev would go up) but then it shifts fine. It does not happen if I am driving fast mostly if I am driving normally. Also does not happen every time but its like once every 20 miles ride or so.
I am at a loss, thinking of changing the trans fluid. ?

If it was my car, first I would check the transmission fluid level, it may need adjusting.

If the level is good, I would change the transmission fluid. Just the drain and fill, not the flush.

I would use Toyota fluid, not the aftermarket "perfect for everything" fluid.

But start by checking the fluid level, at 166k miles it may be low.

There is no dipstick, but you can check the level, although it is a little bit involved.

The transmission fluid has to be at a specific temperature, the engine rpm must be at 800, and then you remove the drain plug. If very little fluid comes out you have to add more through the fill plug until fluid comes out. Watch some youtube videos to get an idea.

You may want to take it to a trusted local mechanic. Or your local Toyota dealer, they have equipment to check the fluid level at operating temperature.

Lexus picked up the car, lets see what they say I have a feeling what you say is correct, the fluid needs to changed or flushed and filled.

I assume this vehicle is long past any warranty coverage. If so, you will be much better off financially at a well-respected local indie transmission shop that is familiar with Toyota/Lexus vehicles.

I got it from a lexus dealer, had 3000 mile 3 month powertrain warranty on it. bought it in dec so I should be ok . They came in morning picked up the car, gave me brand new loaner this dealer is almost 2 hours away from me so awesome service so far. I usually go to my local Toyota for service like oil changes by local lexus dealer is horrible.

I pulled the drain plug on our 2012 Camry at 40K expecting a little would come out and all the trans pan fluid came out.
The plastic leveling tube was not firmly seated and the fluid all leaked out around it.
So I went ahead and did a drain & fill.

Heard back from dealer, the fluid level was ok but the 3rd gear was slipping. They changed the fluid then the 4th stated slipping. So they are replacing the transmission.
what is weird the car never threw any codes.

I assume they will be installing a refurbished transmission. Is that correct?

Thanks for letting us know the outcome.
I'm glad it's under warranty!

Yes I think it’s from a 60k car.

I was hoping it won’t come to that, RX are usually very reliable. To be honest I didn’t even know I had any warranty, I noticed on bill of sale when I went to get tags done. So far I am incredibly impressed with dealer. They cut me a check for new brakes - it needed brakes and put in all new tires. I am a very diy kinda person so high miles didn’t bother me and it had decent service history.

Well maintained RX can last a long time. Just change all the fluids on time, the transmission fluid, the transfer case and the diff oil, the brake fluid, the coolant, and of course the engine oil.
