This a peculiar problem that has happened twice. Once about 6 months ago and again yesterday. My wife and I were waiting in the car for a call to come into the dentist's office. I had the radio on and it all of a sudden turned off. I tried to start the car and it would not start and seem as though the battery was dead and made this clicking type sound when the start button was pushed. We went to our appoints and back to the car and the RX started just fine. I took the car to my car guy and had the battery load and alternator charging checked and both were okay. This same thing happened about 6 months ago but I had called the car guy for a jump. The charging system and battery were checked and okay. The mechanic said it's possible that the starter may have a problem. Before I take the car to the Lexus dealer I thought I'd ask the question here and see if anyone has had the problem and what you did to correct it.

Once the battery and charging system checks out fine ... If other things like, lights, brakes, radio, horn, display work then the starter needs to be looked at.

I agree and would add you should just have your car guy replace the starter. Don't go to the dealer they will charge twice as much.
How many miles are on it? Starters wear out. It happens. Especially with lots of short trips and starts.

Starter details:
The starter is composed of a starter motor and a solenoid. I have yet to come across a bad starter motor in a Lexus, and 98%+ problems if any are due to pitting of the solenoid contacts. Solenoid is nothing but a high current relay + some mechanicals for the gear. Solenoid action is accompanied by a loud click. A decent mechanic can trouble shoot very quickly. There are number of videos on the contact replacement. So depending your expertise, it is well within the scope of a DIYer. [Lexus V8 starter is positioned in the valley and that requires lot of time to get to and put back, lucky you are dealing with a V6]

Salim,
Thank you for the response. I decided to replace the starter relay first because the clicking sound seems like a possibility. If it happens again I will replace the solenoid, neither are very expensive. I would rather get lucky replacing minor cost parts before spending 750.00 on a new starter motor.
