Rear hatch only opens when heated
Hello,
My 2014 RX rear hatch opens only after the sun has warmed up the car. When the sun has not warmed up the car body, I can hear/see the latch trying to open but the opening by the hatch motor doesn’t happen. I hear a long beep and only way to turn the sound is to unlock or lock the car using the remote. I replaced the struts recently so I don’t think it’s that but something causes the system to work when warmed up by the sun. Doesn’t matter if I drive the car around and engine is warm but it seems to be heating the car body that somehow makes it work. It’s a mystery but someone else must have seen this also?? help!!

Check the balance of the door manually. It should be close to perfectly balanced. [like your garage door]. The motor is supposed to provide a light force. The struts on the side of the hatch are supposed to counter the weight of the door. These struts wear out and the internal pressure is sensitive to the temperature.
If the balance is lost and you have to exert force then you need to replace them [Always replace both even if only one has failed]. OEM are going to be very expensive and after market would be 1/3 the cost and they may give you more than 1/3 of the life]

Mine does same
2012 rx350 new struts door actuator motor works intermittently can’t always say only when it’s warm by sun ☀️
previous posts on intermittent operation indicate lift actuator motor replacement which is a pita….
