Cool Custom Wireless Android Auto Build [in progress]

Custom dash kit from an incompatible headunit. Repurposed it for my project. Software and routines handled by a combination of Headunit Reloaded and AutoMate

Cable management. behind the dash. photo shows two cables, ended up just needing one for power.

Ended up with just one power cable. Got a 12V adapter with two 20W PD Type C Ports. One to charge the "headunit" and the other to charge my phone. Had to drill a hole as a pass-through under the shifter/cup holder assembly into the center console

Still left to do: Currently working on a raspberry pi webcam server. Plan to plug in the Pi to the 12V adapter in the cargo area, and route cables to a USB webcam behind the trim and out to cargo door. Keep the webcam as hidden as possible at the top of the cargo door glass. Also need to adjust position of OEM screen (still installed behind my screen) so that the back camera of the tablet can view it entirely. Currently the top ~20% and left ~10% are invisible. I COULD just use that to also see the reverse cam, but as many of us would agree, the OEM backup cam is trash.

That Dash Kit looks nice there. Doesn't look too out of place or anything.

Thanks, yeah. Took me a while to find it, since there's so little Aftermarket support for this RX.

Great job. Here's mine. I made it out of a 10" tablet and I custom programmed it with a wireless controller, so everything is controlled without touching the screen. It blows the Vline out of the water. I returned the Vline and had this for about 8 months. I was wanting to do a Youtube video about it, but have been busy lately.

Can you provide a link to the dash kit? My tablet is currently held in that area with magnets and velcro.

Is your RX Amphibious? It looks like it's floating on water lol

Anyway, this also looks pretty clean. I went the extra mile with the dash kit I found because I didn't want to see a single cable, and also because I figured out how to do Wireless AndroidAuto.

So I never found just the dash kit. Found this (incompatible) headunit for my RX. I bought it anyway, repurposed the headunit it came with, which basically was a battery-less Android Tablet. And instead, I fit a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, which was a perfect fit for the dash kit. I know, much more expensive than most would like, but it got the job done and I couldn't be happier. I still have a few items in my backlog to refine, but it mostly works as intended for now.

Update: It has been a while since my original post. I've been improving on automation design. I put up an NFC tag that triggers an AutoMate flow script, which turns on all relevant radios on the phone and starts the wireless headunit server from Android Auto's developer options, without need to root my device. Headunit/tablet is automated in its own process when it detects a charger connected, which only happens when ignition is on, so that was an easy trigger to automate a flow from.

I'm still working on the backup camera (with an ESP32-CAM Arduino module), got all the software figured out, but thinking of a way to water-proof it and mount it to the back (most likely on a random license plate frame). It is automated to connect to the same network the headunit is on and has a static IP address. I'm able to stream video well enough using WebViewAuto, within Android auto, so easier to automate within the "headunit" as well. Attached is my AutoMate flow for starting the headunit server and all radios. Also ends it when the hotspot times out.
