Default Radio and Air Conditioning Control Panel InoperativeI

I have a 2014 Lexus Rx350 , Canada built I believe , without Navigation.. It has 66,000. miles on it.
The Radio/Air Cond controls in the middle of the dash are not working...you press the buttons and nothing happens .and the Lexus dealer says it is the " radio control unit assembly " that needs replacement........about $2880. !!!
I did some research and I believe the affected part number is 86120-OE450 ( P10175 radio )...but i am still working to verify that.
I really only need the air to work......The radio is not a priority..........But the dealer says the AIR COND controls go thru the radio.......so the whole thing needs to be replaced.

My thought is to take the whole RADIO/CONTOl unit out and send for repair at an electonics shop. I have seen some YOUTUBE videos on uninstall/install , they dont look too bad...... and i have started to explore repair shops in the area and nationwide.

I have two questions :

1) Wil the car be oprational after I take the unit out ? or there are other things connected to that radio/control unit the make the car unusable.......like airbags headlights/brakelights, etc

2) has anybody done anything similar to correct this issue ?

Thank you so much in advance !!

Welcome to CL. You are not the first one with this failure. Below are links to 2 older threads with similar, but not exact failures. However you are probably facing either a new one, repairing yours or getting a used replacement unit, or trading it in as is somewhere. There are usually used ones on either eBay or Rancho Lexus used parts (do a Google search, you can call them). Then you need a good car audio shop to install it or do it yourself.

I don't think you can operate the vehicle after removing that unit, too many systems are integrated into it but these threads may have more information.

Thank you for the quick reply and the info , Clutchless ......I am diligently exploring all the options you suggested.

I also came across a Youtube video by Scotty Kilmer that showed how to make a simple computer bypass switch and operate the Air Conditioner manually..............He did it on a 2010 Honda,,,,,, ( www.youtube.com/watch?tv=0Foh6IF9Z5I )
I wonder if anybody has done anything similar successfully on a late model Lexus ??
I only need the Air to work......do not need the radio/CD.

Thank you again
