The End of 3g Wi-Fi
I subscribed to Lexus Enform services for my 2015 RX450h, for Destination Assist and Safety Connect (only used that once). Recently on a trip outside of the metro Los Angeles area, I asked Dest Assist for directions to a local restaurant. I connected, asked the Operator for the location, he downloaded directions to my vehicle, and I was off. Off 5 miles in the wrong direction into the middle of the desert. I used Apple Maps to get to where I was going. After that, I looked up our destination address in the onboard database, and once again, I was directed to the middle of nowhere. I noticed that the Safety Connect button on the console had a very bright RED led that was illuminated.
Calling Lexus Enform Lack of Customer service was the most frustrating experience I have had all year, with constant disconnections, Reps who mumbled and made up stuff to get me off the phone. It was not until I spoke to the Tech Guru at my dealer that I discovered the real reason. 3g WiFi is being "sunseted" around the US as cellular providers all switch to 5g. Within the greater Los Angeles area, 3g is still available but will end by December of this year. Out in the boonies, there is no 3g, and once my car lost the connection, there was no way to get it back. I asked the Dealer if the could disable the red led on the button, and the answer was no. It's on the same circuit as the dome light.
Solution? A small piece of gaffer tape to cover the LED.
