A message came up on our console saying that there was a TPMS system error. For a few months the TPMS was not working and the display no longer showed the pressure on the four tires and the yellow tire pressure light was on on the dash. Every once in a while it would come on for a short time but then go right off again. A local shop suggested it might be batteries in the sensors. I did a bit of research to see where the receiver is for the sensors is located and learned that it is in the roof, approximately underneath and a bit behind the shark fin radio antennae. Hoping that the intermittent nature of the problem may have been triggered when the car went over bumps on the road, I used my fist to give a few solid hits on the roof liner at the approximate spot of the receiver. The TPMS started working and is now working flawlessly for the past month. May be just a temporary fix, but it convinced me that the problem is either the sensor or just the connection point to the sensor. I don't know if this is relatively simple user friendly part replacement (other than the programming), but I'll remain hopeful. My situation may be unique and it may not work for others but I wanted to share, because I would have really liked to have found this post when I was trying to figure it out.

If take your RX to a tire shop they have handheld readers. They can measure the signal strength or lack of it.
Battery life for the senders is typically 8yrs.
