I have a 2019 RX 350....recently my steering wheel started to make an abnormal noise like if the gears are wearing out when I start my vehicle and the steering wheel tilts down to my memory settings. Steering wheel drives fine....when I turn off the vehicle and the steering wheel retracts up it doesn't make the sound. Only happens during start up. I took to my local auto shop that does regular maintenance and he said he's noticed lots of toyotas and lexus models making that same noise. I'm not happy with that answer since this is a Lexus and shouldn't make any noise when the vehicle starts up and the steering wheel tilts down to my settings. I did a little research online and might be that the motors on the EPS get dirty and the grease needs to be cleaned and re-greased. Need some help....I really don't wanna take this to Lexus cause I'm sure it'll cost a lot of money. My local mechanic doesn't want to touch it....maybe I can try another mechanic? Is this an easy fix?

I have owned many Lexus vehicles since 1989 and have never heard that sound.

 

I have a 2020 RX. I had the same noise except it was while the steering column was moving upwards. It would make the noise when I shut off the car or any time I moved the column up. I brought it to the dealer, under warranty. They replaced the entire steering column, under warranty. I only had a month left on the warranty, the service rep said it would have been very expensive out of warranty.

 

Assume that fixed the problem....
