In the RCL and BUL these "computers" will report any outage issues as well as a current on vs off function for the lamp. With that being said, what determines how the lamp lights up is the computer that is INSIDE the lamp. So unless you swap out said computer and design you own computer (which is impossible without destroying your lamp) you will not get sequential turn signals."

What I wonder is, can I "plug and play" the lights from japan and then the computer in the new light can communicate with the ECU of the car automatically?
Yes, its plug and play if you source the 740's, they send the same signals to the BCM.

Sorry for the double post, But the automotive industry calls the lamp that contains the Back Up function a BUL regardless of what other functions it contains.

Just to confirm, am I right about the difference between BUL and RCL in the pic?

Also, so then you mean I can buy the BUL from e.g. japan and plug and play?

Yes, your illustration is correct, and if you have the LED turn(High grade) RCL from the North American market, all you need is the BUL from the 740 (Japaneses) market to have sequential turn signals. (FYI Pictured in your illustration is the base grade)

Yes I just googled a random tail light pic; mine is the LED turn signal "High grade".
Thanks so much for the info!
Next challenge: sourcing the 740 BUL!

Go to japan, Find a Lexus Dealer, buy lamps, ship back home. Or wait a few years for "JDM" parts on Ebay.

There might be a few other ways I can think of but I do not want to comment on them.

Not me. You think the tow package is expensive, I would say the new rear lights would beat it.

I would expect it to be but $10k is on the "too high" side.

Someone needs to call a Lexus dealer and find out what the cost in the USA.

Called a lexus dealer and found out the cost of one 760A BUL is about $492. Hope the 740A is not too much more expensive.

Sounds like the imported one would be less than $2K for both.
