I didn't stop at a stop light on purpose on a Dry , clean road and had my foot just above the brakes ready just in case it did not.

I think it is nearly impossible to "test" the Pre-Collision System unless you have cardboard obstacles set up like in some of the demonstration videos. I tried to test PCS when we bought our first vehicle that had it but never could force it to activate no matter how stupid I drove.

But, damn, PCS sure saved my **** a couple of years ago when a car pulled in front of me from a dead stop while I was doing about 60 mph. PCS slammed on the brakes with full force while my foot was still on the gas pedal and my seat belt tightened so tight that my chest hurt for the next day or so. I missed hitting the other vehicle by what seemed to be inches. It was an awesome experience.

All our vehicles have PCS and there is no way I would buy another vehicle without it or a similar automatic braking system.

Yours must be defective as my safety braking system has saved us in both of our Lexus. One case the vehicle went into emergency brake mode, avoiding an accident, while my foot was still on the gas pedal. All happened so fast. I will never own another vehicle without this.

What is Lexus' version of collision avoidance? Does it work? How much is it? Must you buy it with other expensive options on the RX?

The Lexus system on the RX is part of a suite of features called Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+). This system includes four features: Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Automatic High Beams. It was a $615 option in 2016, but is now standard on every 2017 RX.

What you are inquiring about is the Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection. It will bring the car to a complete stop if possible or prep the car and seat belts for a collision.

"This system uses millimeter-wave radar and a camera to detect pedestrians in addition to vehicles under certain conditions. To help prevent or mitigate collisions, the system activates an audio and visual alert in addition to brake assist, followed by automated braking if the driver does not brake in time. Automated braking operates at relative speeds of between 7 – 50 mph for potential collisions with pedestrians, and can reduce speed by approximately 19 mph. For potential collisions with vehicles, the PCS system operates at relative speeds of between 7 mph and the vehicle's top speed, reducing speed by approximately 25 mph."

Does it work? I don't know and I really don't want to be in the situation to find out! How much is it? Included as standard on every 2017 RX. With expensive packages? No, it is free with the car. The 2016 model had the option to bundle fancy headlights with the system...but now the lights are just a standalone option.

Theres a video of a pre-collision in the "real world" on the forum, two dudes in a GS, and the system apparently stops the vehicle when it detects one of the filmakers walking across the cars path.

Default Lexus Safety System.

I am SERIOUSLY considering trading my 2016 RX for a 2017 with the standard Lexus safety system. Also the car I would buy has the rear beeper thingie and I think "braking". What does all this mean? If a person or object walked in front of my car and I didn't see him or it, would it actually stop the car? Same in reverse...does all this stuff actually brake the car?

EDIT: I also see that Toyota is touting this for most of their cars. Does the 2017 Corolla have this (I know this is a Lexus forum, I know I know. But I could see trading my son's 2014 Corolla if this really is a safety game changer)

Didn't you have the 2016 with the safety features as well?

All that has changed with 2017 is for the rear cross traffic alert "backing out" normally you hear the beep when there is a car which prompts you to brake. If you don't brake and you keep going, the 2017 model would brake for you.

For added peace of mind, its Rear Cross-Traffic Braking system can help you when backing out of a parking space by notifying you of vehicles approaching from either side. And, if it senses a potential collision, can automatically brake your vehicle to a stop.

I believe the Toyotas will all have what Lexus has. And the 2017 has it. All I did was go to their website and did some digging on the corolla. I would trade it in for your son. You should be fine

Nope, my 2016 only has the blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic WARNING. No braking. Frankly I thought it was just a high priced gimmick. All the cars I looked at that had it were priced above $60,000 with options I didn't care about. I admit that I should have done better due diligence. That being said, I trade cars often sometimes and am OK trading a '16 for a '17 if the dealer will give me a fair trade. Right now we're about $1000 apart.

As a bonus, if the RX has Rear Cross Traffic auto braking, it also has ICS (Intelligent Clearance Sonar). It's not really mentioned much online or in brochures that I've seen. ICS uses the front & rear parking sensors to activate auto braking if needed. Think low speed stuff, pulling into your garage, pulling to close to another car when parking, etc.

My 2016 RX and LX both have saved me from a possible rear ender. No doubt it works.

My 2017 450h braked whole backup the other day, a first for me.

I would never own a vehicle again that did not have these safety systems installed. If they only work one time for you . . . . .

Am I missing something? It only cost you $1k to go from a use 2016 to a new 2017 with all the same features? I would think it be more like $10k

I'm not sure if you are talking to me or not. My original thread got merged into this much longer one and I lost track of who said what, when. Anyway, I'm not sure where you got $1,000. Maybe I mis-typed and missed a digit. But yeah, you hit the nail on the head as the swap from my 2016 RX to a '17 RX with similar features, plus the now-standard safety stuff, was about $10,000.

I got your $1k from your post here. I guess I misunderstood your $1k apart. You probably meant dealer want $11k and you only want to give them $10k

But if it's $10k, I would wait till Lexus fix the drone/vibrations that people are complaining about. From what I've read TSB should be out soon.
