2016 RX 350 Excessive noise and vibration
#1112
My 2015 3rd generation Lexus has a different exhaust design but I've had the same exhaust drone. I finally gave up waiting on a fix from Lexus so I did my own engineering assessment. I isolated the vibration down to the section of exhaust that has the cat converter in it. It was definitely vibrating at certain engine rpm's and transmitting that into the cabin via the support hanger on this section. Another poster had installed a similar damper some time ago, so I decided to buy a couple of them and just finished installing them today. I'll need to wait for warmer weather to be sure, but the drone/vibration is GONE!!! I installed one damper on each side of the cat converter because I wanted to dampen the vibes at both ends. Not sure if I needed both or not.
Amazing coincidence, but the recently released Lexus(supposed) fix for the 4th Generation has a damper on this section of pipe as well!!! No idea why it took Lexus all these years to come up with a solution?????????

Great work. Question though as you seem to have mechanical knowledge - what is the purpose of the, what looks like springs, at each end of the cat section of exhaust. Are they there to absorb vibration, are the bolts very tightly wound on, just interested in how it all works together.

Lexus Test Driver
I have the F SPORT model and when under SPORT+ mode or when the dampers stiffen and going over any speed bumps, rail road tracks, or large bumps, I get a large squeak coming from the passenger rear side.
Going to the dealer soon so I'll see what they won't do lol
btw at 20,000 miles and it appeared recently live in cA no salt etc

Thank you Jim.

Got the TSB done today.. initial results seems to be promising.. had a mild to medium drone and vibration to start with.. after the fix vibration is completely gone and drone seems to be almost gone.. will keep you guys updated in next couple of days.

Dropped car off for the TSB; the part has been ordered. Keeping fingers crossed it takes care of the vibration too.
I did bring up with the service manager the exhaust damper solution referenced earlier, so please do post your post-TSB experience if it removes the vibration completely and if there is still a need for yet another exhaust damper even after the TSB fix. Thanks.

TSB follow up.. something funky
Something like a low harmonica sound was heard couple of times at very low speeds (0-15 mph) yesterday when I picked the car up from dealership and the same thing happened today morning when I took it out of garage… this doesn’t happen if I brake/stop the car and try to re-produce it (seems to happen only on a cold start).. Please let me know if anyone else who got the TSB done is hearing the same weird sound.

Hi when you say you have droning in your 2015 RX-350...do you mean sort of a booming noise from the exhaust like there is a hole in it when you are accelerating and then goes away when you are at speed? My 2011 has this problem on and off. Finally in Canada that damper is $104....not $45 like in the US.
Other similar dampers are 17581-31050, 74080 or 50090.

Removed my dampers yesterday, bringing the car in tomorrow for the TSB. This morning I noticed an increase in Drone and Vibration. I hope the TSB has more of an effect then the dampers I installed. Will find out tomorrow, fingers crossed!!!
