The 2020 models read the speed limit from signs using the camera on the windshield. It is called Road Sign Assist.
Typically the speed limit is displayed on the HUD or dash whenever the speed limit changes in the map database or when a road sign is detected by the camera.
I don't have a HUD, but the in-dash speed limit display is from the Road Sign Assist feature. The Nav speed limit comes from the map data. I've noticed they occasionally diverge, with the RSA data obviously more accurate.
I attempted to search so if it has been asked before my apologies.
Is there a way to show the current road speed limit on the HUD? I may have missed the menu option. I ask because my BMW has it and I have gotten used to looking there to check my speed against the posted speed limit.
On my X5 it uses cameras to show the sign however on my 5 Series it uses the NAVs map data. I see that on our Lexus, the posted speed limit is shown but it is on the map screen which is outside the field of view and is nice when it is shown on the HUD or on the dash cluster.
Photo for reference as what it looks like on my X5 and the 5 Series.

Yes, it's being shown there. I see it on our 2020 Rx350 HUD.
I remember discussion about how Lexus "see" posted speed. Apparently, car cameras read speed limit signs and report that info on to the HUD (and onto Navigation map and onto Multi Information Display).
Therefore, the speed limit isn't displayed 100% of the time. It's on/off depending on roadside signs and cameras ability to see/read them.

I probably should mention that my Lexi is a 2018.
However I will spend some more time searching the manual if you have seen it.

It's part of the Road Sign Assist (RSA) feature. I'm not sure which year they started including that in the Lexus Safety System. I know it was in version 2.0 as it shows on my 2019 ES' HUD.
Anyone else’s speed limit function works intermittently?
Mine would sometimes appear, then disappear while I’m still on that same road.
Sometimes, it doesn’t even appear at all.. not sure if anyone else is having this issue.

2017 here with hud
i recall seeing something on the map for nav, not sure if its there the same or not.

DampDuffer is right. Welcome to the confusing world of Toyotaland electronics - the HUD speed limit display is fed only by speed limit signs that the car can "see". No speed limit signs, no speed limit shown in the HUD. You would think that since the vehicle's GPS knows (almost all the time) what the speed limit is it would be shown in the HUD and, if speed limit signs showed a different limit it would override the limit in the GPS but, alas no, that would make too much sense. As I said, welcome to Toyotaland...........

My 22 has HUD and my speed plus speed limit sign shows up all the time and almost immediately when speed limit changes, it changes in my HUD.
