Take it back to Lexus

To fix the oil and water leaks on my 2016 RX the engine had to be removed.

That’s only 46.000 miles. My oil and water leak started about the same at 45.000 miles.

Did the powertrain part of Lexus warranty cover the repair?

My car still has about a month of CPO warranty left. So a few months ago it would have been covered by both warranties.

I took a look from the R wheel well tonight and snapped a couple of pics. It looks pretty clean for the most part, but I "think" I am seeing some oil residue from a level higher than the black oil pan.

Default Oil pan fixed 3 times

Very disappointed with this repair. Bought my CPO 2016 RX350 2 1/2 years ago for the long haul. The first oil pain fix happened when they certified it at 16K, the second about 40-50K, and the third just last week at 85K when I took it in for a water pump replacement. I have been taking it to a different mechanic after the first 3 CPO covered services. He found the water pump problem and was happy that I was covered under the certification. He said he did not see the oil pain leak(they said it was the upper pan?), and thinks the local Lexus dealer might have said it was leaking to get payment from Lexus. Not sure if it was leaking or not, but I was pissed that Lexus wouldn’t put Mobile1 back in the car that I had just had put in the day before! I know they use some low quality bulk oil. Three times!! I called Lexus to open a case...that didn’t go anywhere. I am covered through 6/22 and will likely get something else. I thought I would have this car for 200K plus. Very disappointed.

Wellpoint

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I am on my 5th Lexus vehicle. As many troubles that I have with my Lexus cars. They are better than any brand of vehicle I have purchased before my first Lexus. Some on this board will swear the all vehicles are bulletproof. But I always have the Platinum Warranty just in case.

We first took it to our mechanic, then to Lexus and they could not determine where the leak was, and added a red dye to the oil, and said to drive it for a couple thousand miles, and bring it back.

This past weekend, we took it back to the dealer. They are saying the leak is coming from a bad head gasket. Our mechanic thought it was coming from a seal that was pressed into the back of the engine block.
We have very low miles on this car. Factory warranty has expired (due to 4 years), but they are covering the work under the 50K mile powertrain warranty.

I am just concerned with having a head gasket issue for so few miles.

Anyone else have anything like this?

Thanks!

Pete
Hi Pete,

What became of head gasket and rear main seal? Did Lexus have to drop the engine, and did they say it’s a common occurrence? I have similar leaks in this thread, and Lexus determined it’s head gasket and rear main seal; during my water pump replacement (bearing). 2016 RX350 40K miles and dealer serviced.

Default Another oil leak @57700 miles

Last year, my 2016 RX350 Fsport was found Timing chain cover leak around 50000 miles. 7700 miles later, I found oil residues on garage floor again. It turns out to be valve cover gasket leak. Fortunately, my car still has four months left before powertrain warranty expired. Should I worry about long term reliability of Lexus after two oil leaks already before the car even reaches 60000 miles? I was planning to drive this RX for a very long period of time.

Just because a leak occurred in the past (a gasket failed), does not suggest that the replacement gasket is more likely to fail in the future. I would think your repaired leaks will last longer than the original gaskets.

Compare your situation to mine. My car has 41,000 miles on it, and no leaks to date. Whose timing cover is likely to start leaking first -- yours or mine?

Hopefully it is just a bad gasket. But it could be machined parts that do not line up properly. That would be really bad.

After driving 500 miles with dye, 2nd dealer isolated leak to timing chain cover, which is not uncommon for 2016 (First Year) according to this forum. This is in contrast to 1st dealer's diagnosis of rear main seal and right cylinder head. One week and engine drop later, car is returned with no leaks. Fingers crossed.

Just curious, what are these dark brown/black specs?

Another update, two months after the Lexus dealer replaced valve cover gasket to fix the leak, I found two huge puddle of oil on my garage floor. I brought the car back, and got call this morning and was told it is the timing cover leak, which the same dealer claimed they fixed it on January 2021 (under warranty). After few back and forth, they agree to replace timing chain cover this time not just resealed it as Lexus told them to do last year. The moral of story, if your RX has timing chain cover leak, do not settle with resealing the cover, ask for replacement. It will leak again if the dealer just resealed it.
