So, would it be better to just let it be. People keep saying how its a looonngggg walk for a small drink of water. If there are no instances of it turning into a huge deal, is it worth the risks associated with pulling the whole engine out to fix something like this?

It's a tough call. It would be cheap and easy to buy a shallow rubber catch pan to put under the car and just leave it as-is. On the other hand, you know it's not right, and it will probably collect a lot of dirt over time where the engine is wet. Before I spent the money, I would want to make sure the dealer was sufficiently large and experienced that they can be relied on to do the job correctly.

Timing chain cover seal issue that's causing the leak. Just dropped my lexus off at the dealership last week to have that re-done under warranty. 1-1.5 weeks of work as they have to drop the engine.

This is why you always get the extended warranty.

A Dollar a day is cheap insurance. A job that takes 8 days worth of labor to isn't going to be cheap.

Has anyone with 2017 RX 350 experienced this timing cover oil leak issue? It looks like it was more in 2016 RX. I have a 2013 RX which has developed this leak so I am planning to upgrade to 2017 RX but don't want to do it if they have the same issue.

I've heard of water pump leaks on 2017's , but not the oil leak.
Overall the 2017 is much better than 2016 in terms of issues.

Dealer tech here, factory FIPG is gray, replacement FIPG is black. Looks like your upper and lower oil pans have been re-sealed before (and probably the timing cover too, but can't see it in this pic).

I saw an oil leak on my garage floor and I was sure it was from my 2008 Mini Cooper. I could not believe it when I realized it was from my 2016 RX350 (43k miles). After a quick online research, I found this thread. I have exactly the same problem and my Lexus was assembled 02/2016. Just dropped it off to the dealer. my 4yr/50k warranty just expired 6 months ago, so hopefully power-train warranty will cover it.

UPDATE: My power-train warranty covered the cost of the repairs. Apparently I had 2 different leaks. When I asked how much it would have cost to me, Lexus said $500 materials & $3000 for labor. Both engine & transmission had to be removed. They were very nice and I had no problem getting this issue covered under the power-train warranty. It took 5 days for them to finish the job.

I am aware this is a year old thread. But I would like to share my experience. After dropping off my 2016 RX 350 F Sport for 50000 miles oil change (with dealer coupon), the dealer just called that they found timing chain cover leak and water pump is leaking coolant. They want to fix both since the car is still under Powertrain warranty. The moral of story, even there is no oil residue on you garage floor, you might still want to have someone to check whether you have timing chain cover leak problem before you Powertrain Warranty expired.

I always make a point to bring my cars in for service a bit before the warranty expires. I had an Acura with 99k and brought it in to check the transmission. Sure enough it was slipping and Acura covered it at no cost under the 100k mile warranty. Good call on your part.

2016 RX 350 4wheel Drive, 90K Miles

I brought my car in for 90K service and i already knew for at least 10K miles about the oil leak prior to this service. Questions i have are:
1. How common is this problem for our motors since i thought our engines are pretty much bulletproof in terms of reliability
2. I check my oil at least once every 2 weeks and i'm not losing any oil. Do i need to do anything about this?

Below are the comments from the dealer service writer:

So, the rear main seal isn't common but it's a car and anything can happen. The front timing cover is a well-known issue on early MY16 cars and I believe is a TSB. I recommend finding that TSB and presenting it to your dealer, then ask for them to complete it at no charge. Unfortunately, you'll be on your own with the rear main seal unless you want to politely ask for support from Lexus. In my opinion, this should not be happening so early on in the cars life.

I don't seem to have a leak. I seem to have "Seep" Per the PDF: Seep Definition A seep is defined as a thin accumulation, film, or coating of oil on the exterior of a component. The area often has a darker or damp appearance compared to the rest of the part and may attract dust or dirt over time.

NOTE Seepage is a normal condition seen at mechanical joints that does NOT require repair but should be noted on the repair order for future reference
