Intermediate
Throughout the years, and owning far too many vehicles, I’ve learned that if you want to enter into a möbius loop of bantering and bickering all you need to do is discuss:
- Oil and fluid brands,
- oil and fluid change intervals,
- and tire brands.

Spent over 30 years in Strategic Marketing & Planning with International Manufacturers.
I look at everything through that lens including oil and filters.
OEM's (Original Equipment Marketers) focus on the leased vehicle customer.
Everything focuses around them.
They want a 36mth+ lease and they don't want to spend much on maintenance.,
Therefore, the 10K oil change comes into existence.
To be competitive, they must offer 10k+ oil changes as part of that lease agreement.
So they do.
The "Buy and Hold" customer is a low priority for them.
So forums like this exist as Toyota is not going to spend much time on them.
If you're going beyond 5 years and 60k, your needs are vastly different from the lease buyer.
10 years and 100K, you're on your own. A couple blurbs in your owners manual and that's it.
I assume "Club Lexus" is for the 60K+ owner.
Therefore, oil and filters are much more important topic.
Same for Trans, Transfer case, Differential, etc fluids.
Puro-Boss, Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc focus on the "Buy and Hold" buyer.
The more conscientious, monied, car owners. That's their niche.

Engine oil reminder reset?
Hi, I just had my oil changed & want to reset the reminder. I found how to reset using a date but I would like to set the reminder using milage as the guide. Is that possible on my RX 350/2022? Thanks

CCN strikes again with an updated maintenance schedule video.

Exactly.
How long is too long between changes.
Walmart Oil states 20K, Toyota/Lexus states 10K, Car Care Nut states 5K, Nissan GT-R Engineer states 2K, . .
Who to believe?
I lean towards the lower end. Not the people who are OEM's (Original Equipment MARKETERS), as they will lie to the long term owner.
They don't like you. They want you to change.
I've changed oil at 5K and its Black as coal and pouring slower. How long has it been that dirty?
I've been changing my own oil since 1976, and I find 2K - 2.5K as the correct mileage.
Toy has 4cyl and 6cyl engines pulling over 5,000 lbs.
For example: The 2024 Lexus LX has a twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 409 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque weighing 5,800lbs with a 8,000lb towing capacity.
3.4L, and those tiny 6 cylinders are pulling that much weight.
And you think oil changes at 10K is ok? That's what Lexus claims. Absolute insanity.
Oil changes MUST be shortened!
2024 Toyota Sequoia:
Curb weight: 5,900lbs, Gross: 7,350+lbs Combined: 15,600 lbs.
3.4L 6 cylinder engine = 86mm cylinder Bore 3.4 inches. 10.4:1 Compression.
Hybrid Motor: 48HP
Toyota states 10K oil changes.
Pure Marketing BS.

@GoBose I just changed my oil on my Mazda 4 cylinder turbo (255 hp) with my mentor that taught he me how a few years back. He commented how dirty the oil was, and to be fair to him it looked pitch black. However I was surprised because I was following his advice on changing the oil every 5,000 miles (manual says 7,500 miles).
I don't have a Lexus RX, but plan on getting one soon. What do you recommend me to change the oil at what interval? For a 4th Gen Lexus RX 450h hybrid (308 horsepower with a 4,740 lbs weight)?

By the way Lexus states 15K oil changes EXCEPT in certain conditions where they say 7,500, so it's not purely 15k for all cars all the time. How and where they are driven makes a big difference.

Im sure the 10k oil change will work, but you never really know. I just go with 5k, its cheap insurance especially if you do it yourself. 5 bucks for toyota filter and maybe 30 bucks for decent oil. If you follow the severe service intervals that would be the safest. You dont have to but it wont hurt.

10k mile oci
Look up 10k mile oci on tiktok and you will see sludge monsters. Cold weather and short trips is a certified disaster at 10k. By the way, I use max-life full synthetic, not a cheap oil.

I think not all cars will end up with sludge an oil burning and sludge, but it would be hard to tell, so I just take the risk. The 5k oil change cost is ok for me. Oil analysis can help you see about wear and oil life, but it cannot tell you whats going on with the oil rings. If they sludge up and score the cylinder you can start burning oil.
The standard 10k change frequency is really just if you drive long freeway trips often. Idling in traffic, winter driving, especially short trips put you into severe service interval.

Yet for over 40 years and 3.6 million kms in a number of vehicles, oil changes have been done at 10K and 15k (KMS) and zero issues with any of my engines. A couple of cars had 300K on them, others in the mid 250s, others around the 200k mark plus numerous other vehicles. These are not your old GM, Ford and Chrysler products, all my cars have been Japanese and most made in Japan.
