Sorry it was unrelated to the engine knock but about the hesitation and vibration problem. I tried doing a search for it again to find the post but couldn't seem to find it for some reason. Guess it doesn't quite help your situation anyhow.
No problem I appreciate your thoughts!

This is interesting-it could be something emulating almost exactly the pinging thing. Hell I was thinking I may be hearing the air being sucked into that intake slot near the hood latch up at the front too and it sounds from the driver seat like pinging. Reason I say this is why would I only hear it in two gears mainly and not in sport mode?

+1 on this. It's probably a dumb idea but if I do it I need to buffer the mic somehow-maybe throw it in a sock or something
Dragging up an old thread to tell that it turned out it was the air intake at the hood latch area for the fuel sucking air on acceleration making the noise. From my driver seat position it sounded like the rattly preignition sound. All is good

I definitely noticed it at idle, years ago had a VW with port injection that made the similar noise at idle, went well over 100k miles with that engine, I wouldn't be too concerned.
hi...when i accelerate hard, my 16rx fsport makes a sound that sounds like in the old days when valve lifters rattle when using low grade octane....any ideas? i use 87 as required so id like to think its not t related to that but rather something completely different

Modern cars should not ping under pretty much any circumstances. For now, you could throw in a tank of 93 and see what happens. Otherwise, your car has a problem.

87 octane is NOT required. The manual states 87 octane or HIGHER that mean not to go below 87, but that you can go higher. As miles accrue 87 may not be enough and one must go to 89 or 91 octane.
Try that and see if it works, if not there are other problems.
