Default phone contact list

I have a 2016 Lexus RX 350 with Navigation. I can connect my phone (Samsung S5) without difficulty, for both phone and audio, and it works fine. But, I am having trouble creating a contact list.

I really do not want to download my ~400 contacts, so what I would like to do is enter contacts/favorites manually. Is that possible?

But, I am worried there's a problem. When I un-link and then re-link the phone, and say "yes" to automatically download contacts (as a desperation move), I get a message "please operate your phone". Which seems weird. And, nothing downloads when I turn on the phone.

Happy to hear any suggestions.
thanks very much!

Default Phone contact list

Check pages 328-331 in your navigation manual. This may help you get what you desire.

Thanks very much. But, I'm afraid I am still stumped.
When I open phone settings, I immediately get a popup saying, "You may need to allow phonebook access on your phone". Once that disappears, nothing happens when I push the Contacts button.

Same result when I unpair and the re-pair the phone.

I've looked on the phone (Android, Samsung S5), and there's nothing I can see there to change, settings-wise.

Any other thoughts?

On my Android 7.0 phone it's under Settings, Apps, select the app, Permissions.

Thanks much! I looked at Setup-> Applications -> Contacts. All permissions I see are set to On.
Anywhere else I should check?

greyguy, it's in your phone's bluetooth setting for your Lexus RX -- "contact sharing"

That was it! Downloaded all contacts from the phone in ~30 seconds.
Now have to figure easiest way to access while driving.
Many thanks!!!
