Default 2016 and 2017 Owner's Actual Experiences with the Tri-Beam Headlights?

A recent thread addressed iihs' latest findings that the 2017 Tri-Beam headlights are "marginal" (in reach/intensity). I am sure a lot of us are interested in the opinions of existing owners of the 2016 and 2017's with the Tri-Beam lights and your real life experiences with these headlights. Please respond (the more the merrier!).

Look at the other topic on this.

I would still get it. Makes my car different than the 20 other RX's out there. LED corning lights. LED turn signals are amazing in the front and back. Makes the car more manly and aggressive esp with F sport package. Auto High beam is a great feature. At the end of the day, perhaps even increases the resale value. Yup, even though the light isn't as strong, it's still really good. Way more pro's than cons.

I can't really say there is a difference in brightness compared to the xenons on my BMW 435i.

I like the xenons a tad more because the adaptive headlights move left-right when cornering

Am I disappointed that they are not as good in terms of performance, yes. But, I have no regrets about getting them. Aznkorboi hit on all the reason I love the Triple-Ls.

If you are on a budget, I would say this is probably the best way to save a few bucks, but I honestly feel that the high-beams make up for the lack of performance on the low-beams. Also, those cornering lights are just a brilliant idea.

Also, my current cars have terrible headlights by comparison, so no regrets! The next best headlights I have are the halogen projectors on my 2007 Infiniti M!

Do not own a 2017 but the triple beams in my LX and much brighter than the triple beams in my RX. Love the look and performance but there must be a difference in the LED emmiters. There do not seem to be specs for these to compare.

Can anyone confirm what is detecting the light output for the auto-high beams to activate? Is there a sensor or camera on the rear view mirror or another sensor elsewhere?

Lexus Safety System+ uses the same camera for Lane Departure, Pre-Collision, and Automatic High Beam. It is the camera housed in the box behind the rear view mirror right next to the rain sensor. The Auto High Beams only come on if the car detects that it is dark outside. That sensor is located at the base of the windshield next to your windshield defogger.

I wouldn't purchase this truck without them, to me it makes the whole truck just aaggressiveness of look even when there not even on. However when they are turned on they work very well as far as distance performane to me I live in NYC so it hard to see length but the line cut off are def clearer and tab bluer then my 15' LS lights. I did drive out to Montauk a few times which it can get really dark out in farm country and the auto beams worked great.

Plus now in 17 there much cheaper because they come alone without the rest of safety pkg, don’t let any dealer talk you out of them def worth it for looks alone.

I'm the guy who posted the data about the difference between the two. I will have to say that even though data does show the standard being "Better", make no mistake that the triples are still very good headlights compared to the market. Koito (the ones who made the headlamps) did an excellent job on the standard headlamp, and they really are the gold standard. The hotspot is brighter than some lightbars we've tested! I've got the projector unit disassembled on my desk here at work along with many others.

That does NOT mean that the triples are "bad" by comparison, they are still great headlights that give a lot of width compared to older cars and even current cars on the market. BMW LED units for example aren't really that great in total output. Benz Xenon and Halogen aren't great either, although their LED units in the E-Class, S-Class and multi-beam stuff on the euro side are amazing. They edge out Koito by just a little bit in overall intensity.

Even though the data shows the Standard headlamps are great, I still do love the triples for the cornering, adaptive lighting, and of course the looks. I'm still torn, haha.

I've been driving a 2017 RX loaner without the triple LED headlights that I am accustomed to. I really can't see much difference between the two.

...but I do miss the cornering lights.

I had pretty new 3200 lumen 5000K Osram CBI bulbs in my 2010 RX and it is about equivalent to the triple LEDs. If the lights were any brighter it would be harder to see the HUD.

I think the light is brighter on low and high beam than on my 2010 RX with bi-xenons, but low beams do not reach as far. I do believe their are clearer. Although it has cornering lights on rural curvey roads traveling at higher speeds (~50mph) the adaptive front lights really make a difference or on sharp off ramps. I do wish the 16 RX with LED where also adaptive and would turn into the roads. As I do see myself slowing down on curves now just becuase I can't see whats in front of me.

*note: comparing the 2010 and 2016 is from mem I traded the 10 for 16 so never did it side by side.
