My '17 is 6 months old with 1,003 miles and when I took it in to the dealer this morning I was advised that I could go 12 months before requiring an oil change and so they sent me on my way. Can anyone confirm?

They do not change oil on first complementary visit (5K miles or 6 months). I do not really know what they do.
First oil change is 10K or 12 months

First service is not much more than allowing Lexus to say first two services are free. What they don't say is that first service is not much more than a waste of time. With such low miles, change your oil once a year or slightly more often if it helps you sleep at night.

Once a year oil changes are fine. As stated by Oldfart, 12k, or once a year is what's recommended.
The 5k service is basically just for tire rotation and to have any dealer only settings changed, like lane change blinker, etc... They should also do a visual, just to make sure nothing abnormal stands out.

My Lexus dealership sales person told me up front the first service is NOT an oil change. It is what they called "quality control and customization service". They asked me if I had any issues like noises/sounds from the engine, door panels, glass roof, etc, etc. They also asked if I found any mechanical or other issues with the vehicle. Then they asked for the customization options I want. (Here is the list: http://www.lexus.com/documents/broch...navigation.pdf)
-I went with increased touch-less sensitivity of the back door
-3 to 6 turn signal blinks
There are many other options that they can change using OBD II port on the RX 350. Some options can be changed via Options menus on the system. Others requires OBD II modifications. You can buy an OBD II reader/writer to do these as well. This is the free first service.
Oh and they also repaid a small chip and a bit of a large chip they found on the windshield for free plus detailed the car inside out.
