By looking at the part numbers, there’s a release every year.

Default 2021 Map Update

Can anyone please confirm this part PT-219-GEN09-21 will work on a 2016 RX 350? The Dealer is telling me the latest update is 2018 and I can only have them install. Stupid to pay almost $300 for an outdated map! I really don't want to install an aftermarket Carplay just to get updated maps on my Nav screen! Can anyone help please?

Looks right given it's 21 map version sold in 2022.

My 2016 RX 450h is in for service & I just inquired about updating my outdated 2016 map. The dealer told me to wait until Feb/March 2023, for the latest map version.

Just walked into a Lexus dealership, went to the parts department and bought the 2022 map update. It was expensive at $254 but then walked back to the car and installed it myself in a ’17 RX 350, as described in the posts above.

Cheers

Thanks lighthurst!! I just don't understand why they are saying the only update for my 2016 Lexus RX350 is the 2018 one and it can only be installed by the Dealer if what you all are doing is possible! It is expensive but if it works it will be worth it! I still love my car and all it does - I just needed the maps updated. Thanks to all who replied and gave directions!

YES, it will work. Instead of buying it from the dealership search the part number (PT-219-GEN09-21) to find a good price. You will be directed with Lexus dealerships with their advertised price. When you receive it, there is a simple instruction early on in this thread on how to install it. I did mine ('17 RX350) about a month ago the only difference in the instruction is that I have to go to the "Settings" and click on the "Update Software". But otherwise, the instruction in the video is basically the same.

When do you go to settings to do this?

Rule of thumb, engine/ignition off when removing and inserting the old SD card. After inserting, turn on ignition to run the engine. The software will determine there is a new software (this is how it's supposed to be). However, in my case the system did not announce it found a new software. So what I did is get into the "General Settings" and navigate to "Software Update". Clicking this and the system started updating as demonstrated in the video instruction. Upon completion, the system will tell you to turn off the engine and park safely. It will require you to turn on the ignition again with engine off to finalize the update.

There is also an "Update Map" option under the Map Information. While on a navigation screen, click on the "Options" indicated by the three dots/lines. Did not use this but it seems to work just the same. here's a pic. Note this is from a 2017 RX350 regular trim (Non F Sport)

And here is the pic of the General Settings Screen that shows the Software Update option.

Thank you for this information. It will help when my new SD card arrives.

These forums are a wealth of information. I just wanted my maps updated and Lexus was only willing to install a 2018 version for almost $400. Based on posts in this forum I went to the parts department, ordered the 2022 map update SD card for $210, brought it home and installed it in less than 10 minutes. Map is now updated and I no longer am driving in space! Thanks to all who posted and helped!!

debating the update, i use to use the Lexus application, to set favorites, then it was super easy to set the destination once in the car.
since the car has no network communication anymore, guess I'll have to see about other ways to enter an address, vs using my phone for navigation

Default Updating NAV maps

My dealer says that the update should be done them. If I were to do it and some damage occurred, it could be very expensive and I would be responsible. Huh? Feeding software into a computer from a chip that was designed for it could result in this?!

Youtube (the place where you can learn anything) has lots of videos showing where the chip goes and how to do it. Anyone updated their own maps in a 4th Gen?

thanx

Len
PS: Sorry if there is an answer to this somewhere. The search function leaves a bit to be desired on this board.

Default 2015 RX350 map update

After spending an afternoon on this blog and a few other sites I hope maybe my lessons learned will help the next poor SOB who is searching for the "right" answer. I was trying to figure out how to update the 2013 map database in a 2015 RX350 we inherited from my 92 yr old MIL, hopefully for FREE! I learned:

1. Toyota/Lexus has both a nav hardware version designator and a software number. See the attached chart (also published by other bloggers on this site).

2. For the 2013 - 2015 RX 350 the nav system hardware version is "generation 7" and the latest software version is "PT219-HDD07-19", Note this chart says "-17" as it was published a while ago, but the latest software for the gen 7 is -19 from other posts (some call it 19.1) with current map data probably from late 2018.

3. For the 2015 RX350 the load is still via USB. RX350 didn't get the SD card until 2016 with the generation 9 hardware (some other models got it as early as 2014).

4. The dealer will have you believe you can ONLY get the update by making an appointment to get the specific part number (PT219-HDD07-19) downloaded from a special crypto isolated NSA quality Lexus server directly to a secret squirrel computer at the dealer then via their USB to your car. All for $150-$250 and an hour of labor so $200 - $300.

5. You can get a code for the pirated software update on the internet for as cheap as $75. Some say this could be "Russian" hacked software and not a real update. Personally, from what I know of Russian "capitalism" they would be happy to sell real hacked Japanese software to the rest of the world for a profit.

6. Those with 2016 or newer RX350's (with gen 9 hardware or newer) can get a 2022 map update (with late 2021 data) on a sim card from the dealer, per above, or cheaper after some internet searching.

7. So, I can upgrade my RX350 maps to a database that is almost 5 years old for $75 to $300 based on source.

HOWEVER, WHY WOULD I DO THAT ? Since people like to use their smartphones for navigation and other apps (streaming audio and video), and those apps are updated daily, car manufacturers are including Android Auto or Apple Carplay software in their nav systems so you can use them on, and control them from, your car "nav head" and steering wheel buttons. Why would they want to spend money updating a car system when they can use the smartphone updates for free ? Toyota/Lexus finally got on board this technology around 2018.

You make your choice, I've made mine.

See if your Lexus app suite on your dash includes Alexa. It's MUCH faster at finding a location/directions than Lexus.
